Hi, I am beginning a trial of parnate. For right now I have decided to keep the dose very low, at 2.5mg twice per day, because of the insomnia. My question is, what if any changes would be needed in my diet for the time being?

P.S. I already know about what diet changes are needed for regular dose parnate, I was just thinking I might not need to avoid those foods because of my lower dose.

I'm not sure whether you need to worry about foods right now or not, but considering Parnate is not likely to work until you reach a standard dose range, it seems to me you would be wise to start observing the diet rules now in any case. Eventually you're going to have to follow them and you might as well get some "practice" in. A few weeks more of not avoiding high-tyramine foods is not really going to make your life significantly better.By the way, it took close to a month for the start-up insomnia to disappear with Parnate, but when it did disappear it happened overnight. One night I couldn't sleep - the next night (and every night thereafter) I could. For me the real struggle wasn't the insomnia but the abrupt plunge into extreme sleepiness in midafternoon. It didn't matter where I was or what I was doing, I had to struggle with all my might not to fall asleep. Significantly, however, the pull lasted only about 90 minutes - then I was OK.

If you're trying to prevent insomnia, it may be more prudent to take the whole 5mg upon waking, as early in the morning as possible. The later you take a dose the more of an impact it will have on your sleep patterns.
Some others who have taken Parnate may be able to give more input on this matter. I haven't started Parnate yet... I'm waiting 4 weeks for my Prozac to washout. I've read quite a bit about it though and others experiences seem to gel with early morning dosing.
As well, 5mg total may not be enough to cause any significant sleep disruption. I guess you'll have to figure that out once you start it.

2.5 mg? I thought they only came in 10 mg. This is my philosophy towards food restrictions and MAOIs (and I have been on over 100 mg of Parnate). Don't live in fear. Try some of the food in small amounts and see how you react. I found out that I can drink red wine, eat as much cheese and foods as I want without a reaction. The only thing that gave me a reaction was soy sauce.
I don't think you are going to feel any benefit from the med at that dose. And there are meds you can take for the insomnia. Besides everyone is different. Parnate actually makes me tired and I have to take Adderall to make it through the day.
Just my 2 cents.

Okay, I am going to up the dose to 10mg, but only take it once, in the morning. Does this seem like a bad idea? I mean, as opposed to taking it in divided doses in the morning and afternoon. Perhaps I will stay on the morning-only regimen for a few days, then add in another 10mg in the afternoon to work my way into a divided dosing schedule.
I am getting some Valium in a week but for now all I have to combat insomnia is hydrocodone 5mg and GHB. The GHB is out of the question because I can't find any information on how it might react with MAOIs. I am worried about taking the hydrocodone on a nightly basis, but it seems like my only option. I have tried not taking anything, and I did not go to sleep at all.
Will taking 5mg hydrocodone nightly for a week or two present me with any addiction or withdrawal problems? Or would I be better off trying to get by on little to no sleep?
This is the end of the thread.
