Paxil and sexual dysfunction! Help!

Posted by coplo on December 30, 2004, at 2:52:24

I am currently being treated for anxiety using Paxil. As many people know it causes sexual dysfunction. In my case it's pretty bad, but it's the only med that works for me. I am trying to find out if any other males out there have themselves taken/or take Paxil and experinced sexual dysfunction and were able to overcome using something from over the counter rather than the often recommended addition of another prescription drug (like Wellbutrin, Remeron etc.)
Any advice is welcome, but I am primarily looking for people who have actually tried to use something non presciprtion with Paxil and it worked/ helped with the sexual dysfunction.

Thanks
jc

Viagra works for me for antidepressant-induced erection problems. Your health insurance may cover it. Even if it's not covered, you can get the largest (100mg) tablets and cut them with a sharp knife. The tablets all cost the same (about $10) regardless of dose, so it's more economical that way. I find that a quarter of a tablet (25mg) is all I need. YMMV.

I assume that the other prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction (Levitra, Cialis) would work just as well.

You don't mention why you would prefer to go the non-prescription route, but if it's because you're uncomfortable bringing it up with your doctor, you should know that doctors see this all the time, and to them, it's perfectly normal.

Did you have total dysfunction before it went away after 3 months? What dose did you take?
Were you able to achieve orgasm even before the dysfunction went away?

thanks

Years ago, I took ritalin to combat sexual side effects on Prozac and it helped significantly.

For me, Effexor XR was much better for sexual side effects than the SSRI's. But I sense I am in the minority on this.

I was on 20mg of paxil for almost a year and ejaculation was always a problem but I did find that diphenhydramine (ie benedryl or nytol sleep aids) increased my sexual arrousal quite a bit and made ejaculation less rare, although it was still hit and miss. I went to effexor and initially had the same problem but all went away after about 6 months.
