Combined low doses of SSRI's? 10mg Paxil/Prozac

Posted by theo on December 26, 2004, at 7:36:31

Does anyone have any experience in combining low doses of two SSRI's? Paxil and Prozac both have different results alone, and together for me I think would make a great combo.

I know about serotonin syndrome, but in these low doses, would it really hurt to try?

When switching meds, doctors usually have you weaning off one while adding another. One time I was stopping Paxil to start Prozac. After my last dose of Paxil, the next day I started Prozac and felt fantastic in this transition phase.

Any input or experience on combining SSRI's in low doses would be greatly appreciated.

I know what you are saying. While not with 2 SSRI, I had the same responce when swiching from celexa to effexor. For the first few days I felt really good but it slowly faded as time progressed.

My doc wouldn't hear of the combination, but I experimented a few times later only to come to the same conclusions.

I was put on l2.5mg of Luvox and 5mg of Paxil at one time and it worked better than just the Paxil at l0mg that they switched me to while in the hospital. My anxiety was off the wall at that time. I have wanted to try Luvox again because about 7 years ago I had good results from it, but it seems to be a drug of the past and the last pdoc who originally rx'd it, and my current one {I can't stand him} won't rx it. But, yes you can take 2 SSRI's together and the one you mentioned sounds good! Phillipa

Hi!

Why won't your pdoc prescribe Luvox if you previously did well on it?

Ed.

Ed; When I told the last doc {who originally rx'd it} that I wanted to try it again, he said "No you didn't, it made you Catatonic". This was not true because I was attending a "Group" which suggested that we only attempt to accomplish one thing a day. I was practicing this and was more relaxed. He really was looking for an excuse to take me off the drug as Celexa had been released and I had said I did not want to change meds. But he did it anyway. I guess I need to stress to new pdoc that I really want to try it again regardless of what my old records say. I don't see him again till third week in January, and I can't get an earlier appointment as he is the only pdoc in the area. Thanks for caring. Phillipa

Hi!

I hope that your pdoc will listen to you.... some docs are not very good at listening to patients (but they're generally very good at listening to drug reps and other pdocs!)

I have noticed some strange mistakes in my own medical notes, written bu people with no understanding of what my problems actually were!)

Ed x (I have noticed that no one else seems to give x's, are they taboo in America? In England, lots of people (girls) always put x's on text messages.)

What do the x's mean in England? Over here they are special. I have a bottle of Luvox that is about 2yrs old in my drawer. Do you think it would be wrong to try low baby doses of it after the Cymbalta is gone or is it too old? Fondly Phillipa

X's are kisses (they can be friendly kisses or sexy kisses depending on the circumstances, if I'm sending a text message to a girl I always put xx at the end- unless it's someone that I don't like.... but I don't generally text people that I don't like!

It should have an expiry date on the bottle. It's strange how your meds tend to come in bottles. Almost ALL our meds come in blister packs, bottle are rare these days eg. none of our SSRIs come in bottles.

The problem is... if you start the Luvox- will your doc be willing to continue it?

They are the same here. We also use O's for hugs. I really am hesitant to try a med without consent. The other is expiration for all meds here is one year, but I've been told that they just lose potency if older. They come in plastic brownish bottles with child proof caps on them with a 30 day supply. Maybe I should wait till my next visit and get a baseline first. Phillipa. O

The advantage of blister packs is that meds last for many years! Most drugs come in boxes of 28.

>I really am hesitant to try a med without consent.

I agree, I wouldn't take it without consent. Your doc may suggest a new treatment at your next appointment.

Ed O I've never seen O's before!
