Hello,
Several years ago, thioridazine was one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the UK. Today, it is used only as a second-line treatment for schizophrenia. Its use was restricted due to the risk of serious arrhythmias, especially torsade de pointes.
Thioridazine was popular because it is very cheap and is associated with a low incidence of extrapyramidal side effects. Sadly, it can cause strong peripheral anticholinergic side effects and is more hypotensive than most APs.
Has anyone on psycho-babble taken thioridazine? How did you find it? How did it compare with other APs that you've taken?
Has anyone taken mesoridazine? (Serentil)
Ed.

Good next day AD effect. No EPS. The worst side effect from daily use was a very bad stuffy nose (traz was a little like that).

As a calming drug I found it very effective, easing the nerves and stopping intrusive thoughts and ruminations. As an antipsychotic I found it less effective having minimal effect on hallucinations and delusions. The side effects were quite acceptable it wasnt too sedating and I didnt get eps or restlessness from it. I stopped it after it use was limited. The nearest drug I have taken to compare it to is chlorpromazine and it was far more tolerable than that. All in to me I think its a shame that its been sidelined I would probably take it again.

Hi,
In what way did you prefer it to chlorpromazine? I once tried chlorpromazine for anxiety and it caused very severe akathisia.

Ed.

Chlorpromazine made me act wacky and made me very restless and jumpy and yet doped at the same time (kinda hard to describe - wired and tired symultaneously). Thioridazine did none of that just made me feel calm and in control of my thoughts. Oh I did get very depressed whilst taking it and prozac. Dont know if that was related to it though.

>I found Mellaril to have very, very little effect on agitation and major anxiety, while Risperdal, Seroquel, and Zyprexa have helped. It was almost like taking a sugar pill. Mind you, it takes about 2-3 mg's of Risperdal, and 15-20 mg's of Zyprexa to affect me. Many years on these meds seem to build up a bit of tolerance.

I don't know if this info will be helpful. I tried Mellaril back in the mid 80s while waiting for MAOI Parnate to kick in against my depression and severe anxiety. So I didn't take it as an AP.
I told my pdoc that it made me feel pretty weird and uncomfortable. I don't recall exactly what happened but I do recall not liking Mellaril at all. I guess I'd concur with what poster Jay said about it.

> Ed.I was on Mellaril for a brief period, after I developed psychotic mania from SSRIs. I was put on 200 mg/day. I don't much remember what it was like, other than I finally could sleep again. Years later, I was desperate for something to help me sleep, and I took 25 mg. Bad call! I have no idea how I could have tolerated the higher dose, as that much smaller one was very unpleasant. I threw the remainder in the trash.

Hi Larry,
What happened when you took 25mg?
