I walk into a class room and I am so afraid that the work is too difficult for me that I don't learn anything. I think thats why I want to die so bad is because I know I'm smarter than this, but being able to proove it seems like an impossable task.
Everyone around here just equates fear with incompetance.

I know what you are talking about - the anxiety and fear that we won't measure up and succeed can be overwhelming at times. I just want to say to you, however, that you appear to be a talented, intelligent, well-read and articulate individual. I have read your posts, and have always been impressed by your wealth of knowledge, your inquiring mind and your ability to put forth ideas and concepts. So, I guess what I am trying to say is that you need to try to change the "tapes" in your head that are telling you that you can't do it. You are young and talented, you just need to find an outlet for your anxiety and work on changing the negative self-talk into positive self-talk. I know it is easier said than done, but with practice and perserverance, you can achieve almost anything. Don't give up on yourself. And, remember, the only one you have to prove anything to is yourself.
Take care.
Tamara

I completelly understand your situation, linkadge. I read quite a few posts of yours. Both of us know very well that this feeling or rather state of mind can not be simple "thought out of". I feel the same, I did get the opposite experience for a while with medications so this clearly was not just in my thoughts. It is "a collateral damage" of depression, this one we have no other choice than to further battle with.

Ahh the joys of Social Anxiety! I am guessing you have tried the SSRI/SNRI route a few times already? Maybe a TCA or two? If you haven't tried Nardil I would highly recommend it, I think I have seen a few 'raving' reports about its efficacy here. I know you have had a rough time recently -- but keep hangin in there. More than anything, don't give up on school! Hopefully you are on a break or have a break coming soon, in which time I would recommend seeing a your doc (or a doc if you don't have a regular) and requesting something along the lines of Nardil or moclobemide (sp?) or perhaps a benzodiazapine like Xanax XR if you are having physical symptoms similar to that of a panic attack.
Best of luck Link -- Happy Holidays!
Matt

Hi Doubting Alex,
I've also been crippled by anxiety that is stronly linked with depression, and also got relief for a while from meds. Celexa+Wellbutrin worked, but I had to go off due to side effects.
Could you tell me what medications proved beneficial to you?
Thanks,

But thats the thing, I am don't have social phobia. I am one of the most social creatures out there. It is the course material I am afraid of.
I seem to take the smallest failure from the previous year and somehow it overtakes all the positives I've had in the year.
I don't know if it makes sence, but before I enter the classroom, I am so afraid that the work will be too hard, and too complex that I can't concentrate on anything. I can't even concentrate in the first class because I am afraid of the final exam.

You seem to be incredibly intelligent. Maybe it's your anxiety that motivates you to post research the way you do to benefit others. Keep up the good work and try not to be so hard on yourself. Try to take it one step at a time. Wish I could heed my own advice! Phillipa

If I was as knowledgeable and well educated as you seem to be, I could face any new material with eagerness, not fear. I hope you are planning to enter the mental health field because you would be such an asset!

Well not this semester. I was hospitalized which put me out of the term. Hopefully I can do something next semester.

I was and still am on Remeron (15-22mg). I had great success with it but it then unfortunatelly pooped out and now it feels as I am taking nothing. Social anxiety is back and going to work feels as hell.
But as they say: Hope dies the last.

I left high school early because of mental health problems. As a result I didn't get any A-levels- this meant that I couldn't go to university. Anyway, after spending a year at home (doing very little) I returned to school to finish my studies. I've been at university for over a year now.
Do you like your course? ......or do you wish you were doing something else? (maybe neuroscience!)
I chose to do Pharmacy because I felt that it was a job that I could cope with. I'm interested in drugs but working as a Pharmacist is a boring job! If I had a 'better personality' I would have chosen to do medicine.
Regards,
Ed.

Thats the thing, I just don't care anymore.
I'd work at Mcdonnalds the rest of my life if it meant not being depressed. But I really don't think that would make a dint.

Hi, all. Just a message not to give up hope. I have suffered from anxiety and panic for years, yet I put myself through law school, graduated No. 1 in my class w/ high honors, and have practiced law for years.
Every time I go into court, I feel panic, unreality, hyperventilation. I just tell myself it's just a feeling, and it will pass, and just start talking normally. Strangely, no matter how scared and nervous I am, it's not noticeable by other people! There have been times I was about to pass out when arguing to a jury, and the observers tell me how incredibly poised and calm I looked. [Ironically, other lawyers without anxiety disorders ask me to try their cases because they're too scared to do it.]
I have a reputation for being really good under pressure. So that knowledge has helped. That I just keep doing whatever I'm doing no matter how crummy I feel mentally, and as I continue, I do start to calm down and realize I am competent. Hope this helps.
For meds: 15 to 22.5mg of Remeron at night and 100 mg of Wellutrin SR in the morning, with an occasional shot of Ativan when needed seem to do the trick.
Bumped up the Wellbutrin to 150mg 3 days ago, but I'm more nervous and my ears are ringing, so I'm going to abandon that experiment.
Just my rambling way of saying hang in there, because no matter how scary it is, you can finish your degree and go on to be successful in life!
This is the end of the thread.
