What med helps with unwanted, uncontroled thoughts

Posted by BRC on November 11, 2004, at 17:05:23

Hi, I have OCD, depression, and GAD. I am desperately looking for a medication that helps with my uncontrollable, unwanted thoughts.

These thoughts have ruined my life and increase my anxiety disorders.

I have tried alot of medications. But it seems like there should be something that can bring relief.

I am also in therapy in conjunction with my current medication. But this does not stop the thoughts.

Anyones ideas, comments, or reccommendations about medications that may help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

BRC

Anafranil worked for me.

There is an excellent book that deals exclusively with the often overlooked obsessional ocd. "the imp of the mind" by Dr. Lee Baer. This book is fantastic. It explores rationally and respectfully with the crushing weight of obssesive thoughts, and offers real hope. It doesn't hold your hand and tell you to just be positive, it really gets to the guts of the structure and pain of uncontrolled intrusive disturbing thoughts.

Also recommend "Don't Panic" by Reid Wilson for anxiety and "Stop Obsessing" by Edna Foa and Reid Wilson.

These books, and patience, really helped me.

The thoughts are horrible and constant and make you sick and send your anxiety through the roof and make it next to impossible to even hold a conversation and make you think you're a complete piece of shit and that you're crazy BUT the thoughts are BULLSHIT. It's hard to explain to people who've never had it and I have and I'm really sorry you're going through this right now, but please know you can manage them in time.

Good Luck,

Tom

Thank you so much for that response. You described me and my symptoms exactly. It is nice to hear from somone who truly understands.

I will try and find the books you mentioned the next time I go to the bookstore or Library.

I tried anafranil a few years back, but with no relief. I am beginning to wonder if the medication does anything at all or even makes things worse. Anyway, thanks for the response and the encouragement.

Thanks,

BRC

I feel for you as I have also suffered tremendously from this. Amazingly, moving to a different locale helped a lot. I'm not sure why. I don't have any recommendations about prescription medicines, but since I've started taking L-Tryptophan, I feel much more in control of myself, just calmer in general. I've found faith and the prayers of others also make a tremendous difference.

Thanks for that response. Is L-Tryptophan a mineral or vitamin supplement?.

And I agree whole heartedly that my faith and prayers have also kept me going on this long.

Wish you the best and thanks for your response

L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that helps with anxiety, depression, and sleeplessness by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. I used it years ago before it was banned in the U.S., but it is legal now. I purchased mine from www.healthrecovery.com. It's worth a try.

My son has this problem. The obsessive thoughts were very disturbing to him and were ruining his life. He found relief with Zoloft and Buspar, and some very specialized counseling for OCD which we located in the Washington, DC area. He seems to be doing well most of the time now, and is very much improved.

Obsessive thoughts have ruled my life for the last 13 or so years. I'm 28 now and it all started at the age of 15. I feel like all I do is try to disprove happiness with irrational thoughts that seem completely rational to me because they do their job of bringing me down. Very strange and odd to try to explain to somebody who doesn't understand but lets just say that all my thoughts are based around analyzing my personality. It's all about trying to stay confident and in one constant state of mind but the thoughts always come in and destroy whatever happiness I'm experiencing. In response to these thoughts I perform Compulsive rituals such as flicking light switches and things related to numbers and number counting. It's all very odd and I truly know it is but is has power over me and I need a way to jump back into the drivers seat of my mind and put these stupid thoughts to rest. Any help or suggestions would be terrific. I currently take Effexor for sever depression and it helps with that.

Thanks,

Tommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, thanks for your post. I tried Paxil many years ago. But the thoughts were not present then. It was for anxiety and anxiety attacks. I did not stay on it very long.

Thanks for the response. And best of Luck

Hi, I wish I knew the answer myself. But I am the originator of the post and suffer the exact same thing. I have tried everything. And I am tired. I feel your pain. Just seems like there would be an answer somewhere.

Wish you well.
