bad dreams on lamictal

Posted by tendency on September 27, 2004, at 16:25:34

Hi. 125mg lamictal BID. Just upped dose yesterday and last night i had some bizarre dreams both of which caused me to startle suddenly awake. first one was with brother and we were having a fight..suddenly i wanted to hit him and i actually punched the night stand next to bed so hard i almost knocked it over. oddly enough, my hand was not hurt. later, had the dream that some creature suddenly bit my ass causing me to literally jump out of bed. nothing like this has ever happend to me before. could it be the higher dose?

For me the dreams seemed to lighten up when my dose got above 100mg and were violent at 100mg or below.

Wow,
I just read this post after I posted below.

At 175 mg. I had night terrors. I would see dark shadows looming over me and and wake up terrified. My doctor said that it is a type of hallucination; I forget the correct term.

Now at 300mg. I am having really vivid, bizzare dreams.

What's up with this? Have you both told your doctors? What other side effects do you have?
I have been rapid cycling ever since I upped my dose. And my vision is quite blurred.

i had some really bizarre reactions when i reached 300mg lamictal. rapid cycling, panic, anxiety, you name it. Had to go back down to 200mg.

I'm in the process of backing down to 200mg and taking it all at once at bedtime. So far this has stopped the bizzare dreams. No, haven't told doctor as I don't think there's much to do but back the dose down.

I'm backing off to 200mg and switching to taking it all at bedtime; this seems to be the recommended dosing approach. So far this has stopped the odd dreams. Haven't told doc as I don't think there is much to be done but lower dose.

I'm backing down to 200 tomorrow, hoping to get out of the rapid cycling and mixed states as well. I've been a mess since I upped it to 300.
Are you still getting the antidepressant effect at 200? Do you take anything else?

How long have you been taking it at night? Are you still getting antidepressant effects during the day? Do you take anything else?

Thanks to both of you. It's good to know there are others out there having similar reactions.

i also take cymbalta 30mg. Since dropping down to 200mg lamicatal and adding the cymbalta things have been much better. The lamictal alone was not providing enough antidepressant effect for me other than keeping away the low-lows.

What's up Colin!

I thought I'd never here from you again. How are you?

Still on Lam?

Still in the UK?

Hi there Amy,

Must be a couple of yours since we tagged onto a Lamictal thread...ahhh, nostalgia!
I rarely poke my nose in here these days, and then only to browse.Haven't seen your name around for ages either.I take it that means you had a bit of a reprieve from illness with the Lamictal then? Hope so.
I've been doing okay in the circumstances(considering I lost my brother in Iraq recently)-prior that things were going very smoothly.I suppose I'm suffering from a bit of a 'sense of humour failure' right now, but that's natural enough.
Gave up on Lamictal in favour of Trileptal around 18 months ago- I'd pushed the Lam. right up to 600mg before conceding defeat.Looking back,I can see that I was hypomanic the entire time I was on it, especially when combined with Prozac. My humble opinion is that for bipolar11 types like myself, something like lithium,or (cautiously)valproate or Trileptal should be used with it,at a modest dose, because Lam. can definitely aggravate rapid cycling.
I find Trileptal to be a a godsend, with 900mg stopping my rapid cycling in its tracks.Precious few side effects right from the start, and I can now happily tolerate 60mg Prozac.
Last week,I experimented with a small (25mg) Lamictal addition at night, and true to form, it feels great. However, I'm gonna keep it on a tight leash this time- no higher than 50mg at most!I won't get back into that slippery'dose chasing' game.
So, good to say hi again, and good luck ;)

Seeya,

Col.
