Parnate--Attn, KingVultan

Posted by bluebird on September 24, 2004, at 11:02:06

Hey, just wondering how the Parnate is going? Today is my 3rd day. Doc started me at 30mg. That is 10mg 3 times a day. I haven't noticed much yet.
I think I am still having withdrawals from the Paxil. How is the diet and what do you eat? I am frustrated with the fear of an HP crisis. I have had a few headaches, checked BP and it was fine. Can you eat anything out, are there any fast foods that you can have. I miss coffee. I haven't tried it. Well, I was just wondering how you are doing since you switched to Parnate? Are there any differences that you can tell from Nardil and Parnate? My Doc wanted to put me on Nardil and I chose Parnate for the reasons most choose it. It is supposed to be uplifting and the sexual SE's aren't supposed to be bad. I am still very fluish feeling and depressed. I take Parnate, hydroxyzine, and Clonazepam. Thanks for all of your posts. I have tried to read some of them. Information is always the key to success. The more info I have the better I feel.
Thanks so much, bluebird

This is my 9th day at 40 mg/day, and I was on 30 mg/day for two weeks before that, and 20 mg for a week before that. What I've noticed about this drug in contrast to any other that I've taken is that things are much more up and down after a dosage change. I've experienced some good periods, as well as some significant depression, and they seem to alternate in an erratic manner. I think this has to do with the drug's dual actions of MAO inhibition and its stimulant effect kicking in at different times. I am going to be on this dosage for at least another three weeks, so I am interested to see where things wind up equilibrating at. Another poster also mentioned that his experience resembled a roller coaster ride. I do not think this is necessarily a bad thing, BTW, as the depression may be a consequence of the drug's action in downregulating receptors.

I eat out fairly often, but I am such a picky eater that I don't like most foods anyway and tend to have the same things all the time. You can certainly have a cheeseburger at either McDonald's or Burger King because they both use that pasteurized process/American cheese, which has no real amount of tyramine in it. You can look up the ingredients in their products on the internet to see if there are any potential problems. I did this myself and saw that McDonald's uses soy sauce in their barbecue sauce that comes with their chicken nuggets, so I suppose this could possibly be a concern. I don't know how much of a real danger this actually poses, though.

I've also eaten breakfast sausage and bacon at several different places with no problems. You should not feel that you can't drink coffee; the guideline is to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine, and I honestly don't know exactly what that means. Does it mean to not take a couple of No-Doz, or pop caffeine pills constantly, or have 30-40 cups of coffee a day? Heck if I know. In my case, which should not necessarily be taken as definitive as far as coffee, I have as many as five or six cups in the morning according to the markings on my coffee maker, and then very often have 20 oz. of "xtra strong" coffee between 2 and 4 PM at a local coffee shop. I will say that I have cut down my coffee consumption from when I was on Nardil, or from when I was taking an MAOI, but I do not believe the caffeine guideline is intended to completely prohibit coffee. It's the same kind of situation with chocolate, where you are supposed to avoid excessive amounts. Again, I don't know what that means, but a person should certainly be able to have a Hershey's bar, unless it is one of those giant ones that weighs like two or five pounds.
