Stimulant poop-out: THE FINAL ANSWER!

Posted by Philidor on September 5, 2004, at 19:48:32

Okay, maybe my heading is a little hyped. But the problem is HUGE among ADHD patients, (but, oddly, little discussed among the experts. )

So just WHY is it that some people stay on the same stimulant, at the same dose, year after year, while so many others find their initial hopes cruelly dashed when their Ritalin's effects fade and finally fizzle out completely, leaving them back where they were?

Well, just yesterday I stumbled upon this brief epistle.

http://ps.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/53/1/102

For those of you ADDults too ADDled to read the whole thing, a couple of the money quotes:

Among the ADHD children and adolescents in the studies these researchers reviewed "tolerance developed only among children ...who were receiving more than 60 mg of methylphenidate or 40 mg of dextroamphetamine a day." While " Among the 98 patients who were taking less than 60 mg of methylphenidate a day...none developed tolerance."

Gotta run. I'll have more to say about this later, as I'm sure many of you will. (Anyhow, thanks to SB_UK ataddforums.com for the link!)

Cheers,

Phil

misleading, I say...
The kids who were at 60mg or less that developed a tolerance were moved to dosaged over 60mg, thus the kids left under 60mg were only those who didn't become tolerant.

This is the end of the thread.
