I started 450mg Effexor in June with 10 - 50 mg adderall as needed for the exhaustion it causes me. In mid July I started having nausea, headaches, pains, low grade fever and an exhaustion that the adderall couldn't touch - like I was sick. Thing is two different doctors haven't been able to find a thing wrong with me. Now the fever is gone, but all of the other symptoms remain.
So I'm trying to rule everything out on my own. Does this sound to anyone like it could be connected to my med dosages? It doesn't strike me that they are the problem, but I have to look everywhere to figure out what is going wrong.
Thanks so much for ANY input!

In reply to Flu like symptoms - Effexor or Adderall Overdose?, posted by Josie Diamond on August 16, 2004, at 18:49:37
In my *opinion*, I would say the culprit is Effexor. Isn't 450mg a high dose? Would the addition of Adderall potentiate the adverse effects of Effexor? I've been prescribed most of the stimulants for ADHD w/o hyperactivity and have not experienced any of your symptoms; I currently take generic Adderall 20mg bid. The antidepressant and psychostimulant combination may be toxic to your system. You might reduce your daily dose of Effexor, but not without your doctor's approval. Best of luck in solving your problem.

I would defo cut down on doses... or change meds even.. docotrs arnt very good... there was someone on here not so long ago about his wife was on lots of meds and had bad pains flu etc etc and she actually died.. after going to numerous doctors.. so i would cut the dose or change meds..

hello there, chemist here...i agree with Cressida that the culprit is more likely the effexor than the adderall. i use dexedrine - a slightly higher-powered version of adderall, if you will - and have not experienced flu-like symptoms over a rather large dosing range. i do take an ssri (fluvoxamine), and can report that side effects are negligible. i do seem to recall the dreaded ``flu-like symptoms'' being a catch-all phrase associated with adverse effects reported for many drugs, if memory serves, along with GI distress, dry mouth, sweating, constipation, etc. and of course, do rule out the possibility that you might actually have the flu, by all means.....all the best, chemist

Thanks Guys -
Both my psychopharmachologist and my internist think it very well might be the effexor - but my internist also ran tests today for everything else he could think of. The effexor is the only SSRI(-esque) drug that has even touched my depression effectively and I am on such a high dose because my shrink is an expert in some of the tougher cases (I'm nothing compared to most of his patients - but I've been to SO MANY PEOPLE before him) and he has lots of people, evidently, on higher than usual dosages if that is what works for them.
What confused me though was why it was ok at that dose for almost two months - and then suddenly wasn't... And I'm an early responder... with all the other drugs, combos and dosages I've tried, whatever sidefx came up the first week were the ones I got - no more, no less.
I almost hope it is something other than the drugs because I don't know how I'm going to come up with the gumption to go through switching drugs again. This would be my ninth or so drug taper-off, withdrawal and start again. How many weeks of illness and depression will that be this time?
I'm considering just going on disability. It's been two years this month of trying to get meds to get me back on my feet again, and I still spend a lot of my days unable to function from sidefx and/or being undermedicated. Oh well. Back to the drawing board. Or off the drawing board as the case may be - I think we are done with the SSRI's now...
Thanks for the input guys!!! Really!
