tapering off Sulpiride - on to Abilify - help!

Posted by Basia on July 23, 2004, at 0:48:59

I am tapering off from 800mg Sulpiride and have started Abilify a week ago. Every 10 days to a week I am going down 200 mg of Sulpiride until I am off it. I also take Carbamazepine (Tegretol retard) and Lamictal ( a life saver!). But i am going abroad in six weeks for six months and am nervous about possible psychosis from the switch.

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

thanks

Hi.

My first suggestion would be to bring sulpiride along with you just in case Abilify does not work well enough. I know of one case where Abilify 40mg did not serve as an adequate substitute for Risperdal 3.0mg to prevent a psychotic mixed-state in someone who is bipolar. Since you might not relapse immediately after discontinuing sulpiride, it would be difficult to guarantee so soon that Abilify will work well so far into the future. Definitely play it safe.

I carry Risperdal in my purse all the time in case I begin to relapse. I know if I take 3 mg of it or even 4 mg my symptoms will go away and I won't need to check in to a hospital. I do this even though my current meds are working perfectly. It probably isn't necessary anymore but just in case, it is there. Just out of curiousity and because I have done a lot of traveling myself, where are you going?

Hi Tammy,
thanks for the advice - i think that i will definitely take a big supply of Sulpiride with me, just in case.
I am going to Kenya to do a placement, probably spending most of my time in Nairobi. Have you ever been there?
