I may ask my pdoc about it for anxiety, becuase i've tried xanax, miltown, trazadone, and Luminal, and paxil.
I really just want to know just info, anything! please.
There's got to be someone around here that knows something.
And would it be effective for anxiety?

hello there, chemist here....you were taking luminal and it didn't work???? phenobarbital is quite a heavy hitter; amytal is amobarbital, yet another barbituate sedative/hypnotic (and the dreaded ``truth serum'' they give to bad guys in spy movies and in real life). you would need about 1/5 as much amytal to achieve the desired effect of luminal, so if your doctor will prescribe it, it might do the trick. however, i wouldn't think that one could remain awake on the stuff or function, but apparently you seem to be rather resistant to the others: maybe your body chemistry is just plain different....anyway, i do hope this helps, please keep us informed, and all the best, chemist

hey chemist, i was on luminal, mmmm about 7 months ago, it was fairly strong with me, but it really didnt mix good, i just felt tired, then i would start feeling just "queezy" like my anxiety is trying to break throught the threshold, felt sort of like a see saw, feel a little calm but uneasy and started too feel anxiety again, then it would go calm again. See what im saying.
Wait i got it mixed up, is phenobarbital more potent than amobarbital? sorry for any commotion.

Luminal sometimes made me more hyperactive, like when i was a 2nd grader and made my adhd WORSE, very ironic, it somewhat slowed my down so i felt i had to keep moving to stay normal. sometimes when i took my Dexedrine with it, to calm down, i still felt i just had to move everywhere.

hello there, chemist here...the therapeutic serum concentrations of amobarbital are about 5 times lower than those of phenobarbital. this does not reflect potency, but one can interpret within reason this information to indicate that amobarbital is a ``stronger'' barbituic acid derivative than phenobarbital. as for your other post, it sounds as if you have a particular adverse - or more appropropriately, paradoxical - reaction to phenobarbital. i should expect the same for amobarbital, but one never knows....all the best, chemist

Was amobarbital ever used for anxiety in the past?
I belive it was approved or released in 1932 but im not sure which.
I know nembutral and seconal are mainly for insomnia, but not for anxiety because they are too strong.
Can amytal be classifed as a antianxiety drug or just a hypnotic.
Thanks chemist, your the best.

> Thanks chemist, your the best.well, that's one vote :)....i'm not real up on this category, so i'll give you what i've cribbed from my merck index and manual first: therapeutic category is sedative/hypnotic, and u.s. patent on amobarbital was 1924. i did a google on barbiturate and found a couple of sites that i would characterize as being partisan, pro-drug sites but contain plenty of historical information that appears unbiased in terms of dates, but again, i'm not sure of the veracity, but dates probably don't matter. the page i'm looking at now indicates that barbiturates had been used for sleep and ``to calm the nerves'' before the US FDA bad guys lowered the boom in the late 1940's: www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cu30.html. since barbiturates have been around in usable form since around 1094 (give me +/- a couple of years), it seems reasonable that small doses would have been used as anxiolytics and larger doses for sedation/sleep. remember, the first benzo was synthesized in 1959, heroin was on the outs by the mid 1920s, and there were few other options to ``calm the nerves'' other than chloral hydrate and probably a few others i'm missing. so, in sum, i'm pretty sure the answer is ``yes'' that barbiturates have been used in the past for anxiety. i am also aware that the abuse potential is pretty high, and they are not on most doctors' lists of treatments for anxiety most likely for this reason, although just my take. i would imagine that a small dose of amobarbital would do the trick, you'd just have to watch the dose escalation/tolerance stuff......all the best, chemist
