considering effexor xr

After 2 yrs on Wellbutrin (and now 1 yr off) I am in need of meds again. The Wellbutrin did not work as well as I had hoped.Has anyone here switched from Wellbutin to Effexor XR? Worsened side effects? I am concerned.

Well, I am on both at the moment. I started on effexor xr - the side effects took an awfully long time to subside. I actually did really well on it for my bipolar2, GAD and panic attacks, but I could not tolerate a higher dosage (i.e. 150mg). So we dropped the effexor down to 112.5mg and added wellbutrin xl, now at 300mg once a day.

I am very happy so far with the results. Even given how rocky my beginnings were with effexor, it has really helped me tremendously and I'm glad I stuck with it.

Good luck,
partlycloudy

What types of side effects did you experience and which ones were most severe?

I experienced dry mouth, excessive sweating, my eyeballs hurt (gave up on wearing contacts until just recently), and I found the sweating the most uncomfortable SE.

Please do not go on Effexor XR if you have GAD. It will not help you .... it might take a mild edge off but I guarantee it will cause you more pain than anything else. Unless of course you never want to come off of the Effexor..if that's the case then go ahead. Because the day you want off is the day you will go through literal hell -I am not trying to be rude but this drug is a dangerous dangerous drug. Just read the posts. Brain shivers, mild seizures, nauseau, inability to even function normally.... lasts a long time and it took me switching to Buspar and Klonopin to get off it. Just so that I could take care of my son - this drug has caused so much suffering not only for me but millions of others....please please please read the posts before you commit yourself to this....

Now you have me worried. I need to be able to function, but at this point, my ability to function has greatly decreased. I know that Wellbutrin did not work, and I have been on Xanax for 2 years. I cannot sleep with or without it. Has anyone experienced aggression as a side effect of Effexor? I had been on one other medication (Celexia?) for a very short period of time and it seemed to cause me to feel angry.

I am currently on Effexor XR. It has been just over 3 weeks that I have been on the meds. I have only found myself to be happy, no aggression. I did experience side effects when I started, and still am experiencing some. Initially (for about a week and a half) I had dry mouth, chills, clouded thinking, and insomnia. I am still experiencing the insomnia and am now experiencing anorgasma as well. Other than these two things I do feel great though. I am happy with lessened anxiety.

I addressed the withdrawal that I have been reading about on this site with my dr and she said that as long as you take it really slowly it should be tolerable. I'm not so sure after reading about SO many people having problems coming off. She also did say that the drug is non-habit forming, which is good to know.

I don't know if this helps any. I feel a bit unsure of what to do as well.
