The think is I have never told the therapist, or the pdocs that have talked to me that I am parinoid but I always deny hearing voices.......I am so affraid of having that on my 'record' because I am a non custodial mom and if that is documented.......i have a bad feeling I will never ever NEVER get my kids back. even though I have joint.ANY AND ALL ADVICE and DIRECTION NEEDED ASAP!!!

One year in therapy is a long time, and its not all that long. Good for you that you're sticking with it.
That you're asking Babbleland about this suggests to me that maybe, just maybe, you might be feeling enough **trust** in your T to broach this topic. My $.02 is not to rush trust ... especially with a pseudo like yours! You'll share it when you're ready. By that, I don't mean that you will trust your T 100%, but that the balance between your fears and your trust that she can help you will tip in favor of trust. If you're willing to bring it up here, then maybe that day is not so far off.

I know what you mean. I have some dx's that could cause serious career/educational problems if they weren't kept secret.
I think you should talk about confidentiality issues with your therapist and psychiatrist. You should be able to request that they not formally dx you with anything, and avoid making written notes that could be used against you. Hopefully, you have (or can find) doctors that understand these issues and will help you with your symptoms without labeling you.
For example, when I suffered an episode of paranoia my psychiatrist/therapist called in a prescription of an antipsychotic labeled "take one or two tablets as needed FOR ANXIETY."
Good luck. Remember, you have a right to good care, and confidentiality is an essential part of that.

>Without offending anyone on this board, I think that the best person to give advice as to how you should proceed is not a poster, but a government-sponsored family lawyer (meaning very low cost or free depending on financial circumstance) or private attorney. This is a very sensitive topic involving the intricacies of law and mental health. I realize you may feel that psycho-babble is the only place you feel comfortable asking for advice, but this is not a board full of legal professionals skilled in the area of family law. You need to talk with someone who deals with these types of issues on a daily basis, so that you can determine how best to proceed.
I would suggest that you do not divulge to the attorney the exact nature of the psychological issues you are dealing with. Merely consult with one and get an idea of the law as it relates to psychiatric conditions and child custody in your state. Then once you are fully confident that your condition won't affect your future with your children, you can decide what to tell your p-doc.
Good luck, and I hope all turns out well.

Ummm... antitrust, obviously if I had known that you already checked all your legal options, I wouldn't suggest that you go through all that again. I figured that you already have sought legal advice in the past, since this is such an important area of your life, but your initial post did not make that clear. I just wanted to make sure that, IN CASE SOMEONE ON THIS BOARD DID SUGGEST WHAT YOU SHOULD DO, that you don't act without the guidance of someone with the right qualifications. Just b/c we all mean well doesn't mean we always give the right answers. Of course everybody here wants what's best for all the posters. That's one of the reasons why we all come here. So I wish you the best for the future.I do know if I get that a certain DX-and it goes on my record-IT WILLL EFFECT IF I EVER GET MY CHILDREN BACK-my therapist told me that way back then asked if I 'hear voices' so of course I said NO! hello!!!! The doctors and therapists are not out to get you or label you; their fundamental purpose is to help you. Letting them know you are paranoid or hear voices is essential to being diagnosed with schizophrenia, a not particularly rare disorder that affects approximately one percent of the population, which is a huge number of people. My opinion is that your fear is warping your perceptions, and that you should try to overcome that fear long enough to let a mental health professional know what is going on. The stigma of mental illness is becoming less with each passing day, and you owe it to yourself and your children to try to provide the best life possible for all of you.
