Has anyone ever had depakote "switch" them into a hypomania? I haven;t heard of this happening, but I am wondering if this is what's going on with my son.

that would sound very rare indeed...however is he also taking an AD along with the depakote? If he is, it is entirely possible that he could have break through hypo-mania - if the dose of depakote is to low to treat his symptoms

That is VERY weird. Depakote is primarily anti-manic. How is his sleep? Does he have a lot of caffeine?

i concur, for what it's worth....my 2-week stint with depakote was the most foggy - mentally and physically - period in my life....i don't know of any paradoxical reactions like this in the literature....any preexisting medical conditions? all the best, chemist

It's possible he is not on a high enough dose for the depakote to prevent a manic episode. Do you know what level his blood tests show? Unless I'm above 70u I can have a full-blown manic episode (and that's taking 1000mg of depakote a day).
take care, judy

I was on Depakote ER 1250mg for 10 months. It brought me out of an extreme agitated manic state. I did feel groggy and had difficulty thinking clearly. However, it was a miracle drug for me. I eventually was switched to Lamictal and have had the same success. Good luck.

Well, I just had what my doctor believed was a paradoxical reaction to my depakote. I was on it at a rather low dose (750mg) and about two-three days after I started it I had my most manic episode yet. Was a couple days of pure hell, luckily it seemed to go away as I started to lower my dose per my doctor's orders. This was my first time having an episode of such severity (As in I've never had a full blown manic episode like that, only pretty nice hypomania), so my doctor is pretty sure that it was from the medicine.

i lowered my sons dose and today was the first day he has not had any aggressions. We'll see what happens the next few days, but I am beginning to think it was the depakote.
