Two prominent psychopharmacologists have espoused this combo, and even stated Remeron is good in treating serotonin syndrome.
Remeron has shown to have anti-OCD utility in some patients.....
what do you guys think??
Ace.Djmmm- if you read this can you please name the article this info is in (MAOI + Remeron= safe)- I forgot it and im at uni now!!!

I had a dysphoric manic episode on Remeron. In increases norepinephrine so I would stay away from it.

My doctor was receptive of this idea, but would be extremely reluctant. It is not the 5-HT2/3 antagonism that is the problem. My concern would be related to NE alpha 2 antagonism and the increase in NE activity it promotes.
I'd like to see anything you can find on it.

It's at the end of the section "Combinations with other antidepressants."
My opinion is that Remeron is a safe drug to use with an MAOI, similar to how trazodone is. Trazodone also has a relatively powerful alpha-2 blockade, and while this does promote NE transmission (as well as 5-HT transmission--alpha-2 heteroreceptors are also located on serotonin neurons), this is a relatively weak effect, all things considered. Alpha-2 agents by themselves make pretty lousy antidepressants; although, they can be useful as augmenting agents.
Beyond that, it's clear that from the well established use of some tricyclic antidepresants with MAOIs, even ones with such significant effects on NE and 5-HT reuptake as amitriptyline, that the effects from Remeron's alpha-2 antagonism are likely fairly trivial in comparison. I think trazodone is even safer, as it blockades 5-HT1 receptors in addition to the 5-HT2 blockade it shares with Remeron, and to my way of thinking, trazodone would be an even better choice for treating serotonin syndrome. I think both drugs are perfectly safe to use with MAOIs, however.

Where can I find more information on this?

I thought these heteroreceptors were inhibitory upon serotonergic neurons.
Thanks.

>It's safe, all you have to avoid is SRI's like Clomipramine, Imipramine, Effexor & the SSRI's. Remeron doesn't really raise serotonin. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Clonidine & Remeron condradict each other. Clonidine is an Alpha-2 agonist & Remeron an antagonist, so if you have a hypertensive crisis, Clonidine won't lower your BP while taking Remeron. Chlorpromazine is probably best to cary as it lower BP as well as deals with SS.
Cheers,
Panda.

That is addressed at this site that Todd, AKA King Vultan, referred to in his previous post.
