Mood Stabilizers and anti-depressants

Posted by jms600 on April 14, 2004, at 15:10:47

Can anyone tell me if mood stabilizers have any anti depressant action, or are they solely given to stop manic episodes??

My P/doctor is giving me Sodium Valproate next week for anxiety, but I could really do with a boost to the Prozac I am on for depression.

I am hoping the Sodium Valproate will help with my depression, as I don't really suffer from mania/bi-polar.

The literature states that Lamictal and Lithium are the two anticonvulsants with antidepressant properties--or at least they are the only ones with drug trial eveidence to suggest as much. I was on Tegretol prior to Lamictal now and the Tegretol didn't do a thing to boost my mood. It stopped my manias dead in their tracks, though!

I have read lithium has serotonergic effects. Good luck! are you new on Prozac?
