Effexor is one of those drugs that can, apparently, have either effect. My own experience with it is that I did gain some weight over time, but nothing like on Paxil. Over the course of a few years, I gained about -- wait, I was about 30 pounds underweight, so gaining 45 or so put me just above normal for my size. It's not a monster weight gain drug, but some people gain weight on it. I've heard that some people lose weight on it, though.
I think this is a case of "Your mileage will vary."

I gained 20 pounds in the three months I was on Effexor. Totally sucked and it was hard to even lose weight on Effexor. I have 6 pounds to lose to get back to where I was before I started it. I will never take it again. EVER!!

Ihave lost 30-35 lbs. since I started Effexor last June. I think it may exacerbate eating disorders, but that's totally my own opinion. I might have lost the weight due to my depression.
