Anyone go through Zoloft withdrawels?

Posted by rainbowlight on February 24, 2004, at 16:21:08

I am 5 weeks off, and having a horrible time. I am wondering what symptoms others have experienced when going off this med, and how long did they last?

Hi,
Everyone always talks about Effexor w/drawal and I have to say Zoloft was harder to come off of then Effexor - mind you BOTH were a nightmare. It lasts about 4-5 weeks progressively getting easier.
I described it as all the effexor withdrawals PLUS going down an elevator sideways (a feeling of constantly).
good luck to you-
katia

I was on Zoloft 150mg's about three years ago. My medical doctor told me to "Just stop it cold turkey". It was a miserable feeling. I took advice from people on these boards who experienced the same thing and I went back on the Zoloft and began to taper slowly. Very slowly. I did experience the "brain zaps" but they did go away after two months. I began to feel much better. It can be done even if it is uncomfortable for awhile. I do believe this med is very helpful for some but I needed to switch to another med especially after being diagnosed BPII. I am on meds for that and finally am feeling much more level and less depressed. Good luck and don't forget to talk to your MD about this.

Hi Katia. I am not sure if I already responed to your post but I don't see it. So I will try again.
I was on Depakote initally and it did help but I felt like a zombie. I was also gaining too much weight and losing my hair. My Pdoc switched me to Lamictal very slowly. I am now at 175 mgs and will be at 200 mgs next week. He wants me to take 100 mgs in the morning and 100 mgs at night. I am also on 75 mgs of Seroquel at bedtime. Initially when I started the Seroquel two years ago I did have a little weight gain and felt groggy in the morning. That went away after a couple of weeks.

I didn't notice much difference with Lamictal until I reached 175 mgs and then I began to really notice an improvement in my mood. I was not as depressed and my moods have been leveling out. I will keep you posted.

I had a terrible time coming off of zoloft. Was on a high dosage of 400mg to treat OCD. I had to taper gradually and actually took me almost 3 months to come off completely. I had terrible brain "zaps" every time I turned my head or moved quickly, severe depression and mania, horrible OCD symptoms, stomach issues, and cried all the time. I also felt worn out and tired with body aches similar to the flu. The pdoc called it seratonin discontinuance syndrome. Jenn
