Celexa/Lexapro Gives Me Hives !!!!

Posted by TylerSF on January 12, 2004, at 12:21:41

I have been on both of these medications before and neither gave me any problems. Went back on Lexapro because of returning panic attacks and am getting hives after every dose. I thought it might just be the lexapro so I switched to Celexa and it did the same thing. NEVER before have I had this problem with SSRI's. Please give me whatever information you have on this..Is it dangerous? If I switch to something like Prozac, which I don't want to do, will have the same problem. You posts are greatly appreciated.

Tyler,
How bad are the hives. I am taking Lexapro and Restoril and am unsure which gave me the hives that I experienced. I got them on my back and under my chest but quite a light case. I am seeing my pyschiatrist tommorrow and intend to ask about them. They appear to be going away though after three weeks. Talk to your doctor. Best Steve

They can get pretty bad..I get them in the same places you describe but I also get them on my forehead and sometimes on my eyelids. They seem to appear about 1-2 hours after taking my lexapro dose and pop up almost anywhere I begin itching..As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating as the medicines, Celexa/Lexapro, have been extremely beneficial for me in the past..Thanks for your response. In other input even from you Dr. Bob would be greatly appreciated.

Tyler,
I'm sorry to here that. Could it possibly be anything else or an interaction with another medication perhaps? Are you going to see a dr. about it. I know I was worried about the rash as the Lexapro seems to be working.
Best Steve

Thank you for your responses. I am planning on seeing a doctor but currently my biggest concern is that the hives are symptoms of a toxic reaction. It takes two weeks to get an appt. with the doc and if I stopped the medicine now then I would be right back at square one. (6-8 weeks for any other medicine to kick in) My current solution is to take the lexapro every other night before bed. I will get itchy right before I fall asleep but in the morning I seem to be ok. Lets hope they go away. Thanks
