Question about Fish Oil

Posted by Siraris on December 19, 2003, at 15:23:55

A lot of people are saying how helpful Fish Oil is. I don't know anything about it, and I wanted to ask people who are taking it a few questions.

First of all, it helps with cognition? You've really noticed helpful effects from it?

How do you know how much to take? Does the bottle tell you? I would like to get a few responses on how much people take, or if there is a universal dose.

How long do you take it? How often and whatnot, and is it something you take for the rest of your life, or just a few months or a year?

Last thing, does it make you smell? I know things like garlic and fish make you smell like them, does this do the same? If so, what do you do to counteract it?

Smell varies from brand to brand, but generally is not too bad. There are two fatty acids in fish oil that are crucial to brain membrane function, they are EPA and DHA. Fish oil and marine sources are the best as plant sources of omega 3's need to be converted by the body to their useable form of DHA and EPA. Omega 3's also exert some mood stabalizing properties due to their ability to protect cell integrity.

Generally the dose varies of about 900 mg of EPA and DHA together (what is normally found in 3 grams of standardized fish oil) to double or tripple this. Some studies have found EPA to be the more potent antidepressant and recomend doses of around 1 gram of EPA (around 6 g or standarzied fish oil). This is something that can be taken for a lifetime or for as long as you want. It is likely to exert its full benefit over a few months to a year, as the north american diet is typically depleated of these nutirients and the brain can become quickly starved.

Omega 3's also prevent the likelyhood of suddent death from heart attack, due to their ability to reduce inflamation and thin the blood.

Best of Luck

So is EPA And DHA in fish oil, or are they two seperate things?

Do you take it once a day, at night, in the morning, with meals etc. And what about the smell issue. Besides that, it sounds completely harmless and like it could be extremely benificial.

You say it's a very effective anti-depressent, how does it react with SSRI's like Paxil or Benzos like Klonopin?
