Successful sexual dsyfunction solutions pls share!

Posted by Jed_9 on December 14, 2003, at 1:25:27

I think I should start a new thread on this instead of just the Buspar thing...

Anyone with success helping sexual side effects from psych meds please share... With Buspar, Wellbutrin, or other meds. Even how common is it to use Viagra or similiar because of SSRI or antipsychotic sexual dysfunction. I need the feedback please.

I am male, but females are welcome to reply too.

Thank you.

Hello,

I'm a guy, and pretty much every AD I've tried (including Welbutrin!) messed up my sexual desire or ability.

Finally I decided to try an MAOI. I'm been taking Parnate for about a week, and haven't been so interested in sex since I was a teenager. (before I became chronically depressed) No dysfunction, emotional numbness, or weight gain, either.

The dietary restrictions really haven't been a problem at all. After 7 years of unsuccessful fiddling with meds, I can't believe that a drug from 1959 is actually working for me.

I think anyone who hates the side-effects of the current generation of antidepressants should seriously consider MAOIs.

brussell,

Thank you for your feedback. You are lucky you found that med. The MAOI. and are having good success.

My problem is with an antipsychotic Abilify (and all the other APs I've tried). I wish there was an antipsychotic that did not cause the sexual side effects but is also effective against psychosis.

I am bipolar so maybe/hopefully I can discontinue my antipsychotic when this episode is over. And only take a mood stablizer.

Thanks again.

Oh bummer, I didn't know you were bipolar. Sorry. Are you able to take AD's without setting off mania?

I think you're right, you should just axe the Abilify as soon as it's safe to do so. I've taken antipsychotics (including Abilify--my first and last tablet flattened me for a whole weekend) for BPD symptoms, and they've all made me emotionally numb and incapable of fantasy.

I'm not sure it's possible to make a drug that can control psychosis while at the same time permitting a rich sex life. (After all, isn't the feeling of losing oneself an essential part of good sex?)

Good luck with the mood stabilizers!
