Wellbutrin and jaw pain?

Posted by Mrs. R on December 15, 2003, at 7:32:03

I searched the archives and found a couple of references to users developing jaw pain on Wellbutrin. I recently increased from 150mg to 300mg a day and am now experiencing headaches in the morning and terrible pain in my right jaw. In fact, my jaw hurts to the touch and it's painful to chew.

I went back to the 150mg this morning and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if these side effects subside again at the lower dosage.

Thanks,
Mrs. R

<<Hmmmmm, that's interesting. I'm on WB, and have been getting headaches more frequently recently, but I thought it was (and it might be) just stress. Also, I've recently had some jaw problems, not as severe as yours. Sometimes it's hard for me to chew without pain. My dentist told me years ago I have TMJ, so I figured that's what it was and it's finally getting worse.

Your jaw pain sounds severe enough to be TMJ. Can you get it checked out by a dentist? Teeth grinding at night, maybe, or something related to tension/stress....

I'm sorry I don't have info. to help you....but *you* gave *me* some food for thought...see if this stuff's linked to WB.

Good luck,

Susan

Hi: Searching the archives of this group brought up a few topics related to this so I know others may experience this. I'm hoping that going back to the 150mg/day will relieve the problem. I've never had a minute's worth of trouble like this until a couple of days ago. I know I don't grind my teeth because hubby would tell me if I did.

It is probably bruxism. I had this too when I started WB...I was clenching my jaw very tightly.

It is a fairly common side-effect.

Your doc can give you something for it...Klonopin worked for me.

I have read that many of the antidepressants cause the bruxism that you have been experiencing. Buspar is usually given to help reduce that side effect. Klonopin would probably work for it too.

You have to way the benefit of Klonopin vs Buspar for yourself. Buspar doesn't have the physical dependency problem, but it isn't as powerful as Klonopin. If you are having a tremendous amount of anxiety from the Wellbutrin, then Klonopin may be you better med for you. It will also prevent having a grand mal seizure from Wellbutrin too. But, if you do take Klonopin, Klonopin is a CNS suppressant & Wellbutrin is stimulating the CNS. It's the same thing as taking an upper and a downer.

Personally, I found Buspar to have more benefit for depression than anxiety. It's a real hassel to keep taking meds to counteract the side of effects of others. Aren't you on Wellbutrin to counteract the weight gain and help the sexual side effects from Lexapro? Now, you will have to take something to help the bruxism from wellbutrin. I hope you will not have to add an additional med with decreasing the Wellbutrin back to 150 mg per day. It gets quite costly to take multiple pills.

Hi:
I just wonder how long you've been on WB.
When I started WB sr, ... recalling around 100mg-200mg. a day, I had jaw-pain like your description. Even I did ask my dentist friend who suggested to go to a specialist for jaw(I forgot the name for this, ....).
However, this 'terrible' bad side-effect went away as my system started to adjust WB. Probably, about one to two months later after WB sr therapy along with other meds. Then, in my guess along with firsthand experience, this/jaw pain due to WB will go away as the time progresses.
In the meantime, I suggest that soft diet such as well-cooked meals, espeically meaty food as much as possible.

Happy:

Started WBXL 150mg/day on Nov. 6th and experienced no jaw pain until it went to 300mg/day last week. Increase was due to the fact that my sex drive had not returned on 150mg/day. Yesterday I went back to the 150mg/day figuring the sex drive will just have to stay gone for a while. I do notice that my jaw isn't quite so tender this morning.

Hi:
>>> Started WBXL 150mg/day on Nov. 6th and experienced no jaw pain until it went to 300mg/day last week. <<<<
It sounds to me like your dosage went 'Too' fast. In my case, I stayed around 100mg.-150 mg. for awhile, probably two months before hitting around 250mg.-300 mg. But, still I experienced 'Jaw Pain' like yours.

In my knowledge along with my personal experience, most of psycho-meds. need to go 'slow' like one and a half months' duration. If you prefer less side-effect, you need to go 'slow.'
In regard to the marital/sex life, I quite understand, ... however this, mental illness is classified as one of serious form 'illnesses' such as diabetes, heart-disease and other significant ones. Thus, you need your spouse's understanding and support to get through 'rough' spot, ... sex life.

And I'm very lucky that I have a husband who understands completely. :-)
