Best Meds for Social Phobia?

Posted by BigDave on November 4, 2003, at 5:19:01

Can anyone recommend any meds that have been successful in dealing with social phobia or anxiety?

I've heard Nardil is the best, but for me it might not be possible to go on this, so is there anything else?

I've tried SSRI's in the past, including Paxil, but none of them have worked, as I couldn't tolerate the side effects longer than a few weeks.

At the moment I'm using Diazepam (Valium) to manage the anxiety but it doesnt do anything to treat social phobia.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

BigDave

Only effective med for me is Nardil. I wouldn;t worry too much about the diet restrictions. As to beer, I drink at least 21 beers/week (light American beer) and have had no problem with it. I had one mini-hypertensive crisis a few years ago-- it was sparked by gorgonzola cheese on a salad. It was not a big deal-- just a headache and my blood pressure went up for a while. The ER had no idea what to do though, they just had me rest and they gave me a black chaulky liquid to drink-- I think it was some sort of poisoning protocal.

I have severe SAD. Proac didn't work. Paxil worked at the margins only. A new PDoc added Remaron to the Paxil. I won't exaggerate because I have been in your shoes and know all too well the suffering and costs - the social and profesional losses.

The new drug combo was a miracle!! (Paxil + Remaron). I have not had a single SAD attack in the five months I've taken these meds. I am free! I am interacting with people and doing things I haven't done for decades.

I also suffer from mood depression. It was 90% eliminated. I ceased to be conficted and agonized over getting out of bed in the morning.

My Doc says Zoloft with Remaron would work, too.

I can't predict how you will respond, but if you haven't been dowm this road, you might want to give it a shot.

It saved my life and set me free.

I have Social Anxiet Disorder, GAD, insomnia induced by anxiety, and mood depression. I don't know which I hve "more of". But they all went into omplete remission when I had the Remaron added to my Paxil.

I'll consider you recommendations. Thank you for them.

By the way I became manic-depressive for the in my life a coupe weeks ago. Doc says too much seraton and cut my Remaron dose. but I'm concerned about the loss of norepinephrine support the remaron provids. I'd prefer to drop the SSRI and go with an SNRI (Strattera?)reenforced my remaron to further increse norepinephron and provide limited seratonin support.

Thnks again for your feedback. Anything else your motivated to say would be greatfully appreciated by me.

I guess we are all different. Prozac and Paxil (SSRIs) did not make me happy at all. They reduced Social Phobia by about 20%. Adding Remaron to the Paxil did the trick. Haven't had a single panic attack since. And it has made me happy.

So I am thinking of the SNRI option. Keep Remaron to retain SOME seratonin suppoer but switch to Strattera (an SNRI) for the dual action noepinephine boost provided br the two drugs.
