Just started on 40 mgs/day of Geodon twice daily for a fairly treatment resistent bp2 condition. It seems like right after I take a dose, I am awake, alert, etc. (so much so that we switched my dosage schedule from bedtime to 7pm). But then after about 3 hours, I am wiped out. Not so much sleepy as feeling like my limbs are made of lead. Anyone had this experience...or any experience on Geodon for that matter? How long did it take for side effects to subside (if they ever did)? Has anyone had good luck with it calming those racing thoughts?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
Allison

> AllisonHi Allison,
Geodon affected my heart immediately--in a really bad way.
I've successfully taken Zyprexa, Risperdal, & Seroquel (which I take currently). Zyprexa causes weight gain and Risperdal can cause lactation and other bad things. Seroquel definitely calms those thoughts.

I have N-E-V-E-R felt as good as I did as when I was on Geodon (40 mg taken at bed time). However I could not stay on it due to very bad uncontrollable involuntary movements that just keep getting worse and worse over time. I even tried meds to stop the movements but it didn't help. I then went on Seroquel with no problems but later wanted to try Abilify which did me the same way as the Geodon, giving me the uncontrollable involuntary movements that once again just started getting worse and worse. So I'm back on the Seroquel and I'm not having any problems with it, however I don't feel as good as I did when I was on the Geodon, it truly was life changing for me when I was on it for the short time that it was working good.
Oh, I also take Ambien for sleep. HTH.

I'm so sorry to hear that Geodon affected your heart like that. I have to say, I got a little freaked when I read the enclosed pamphlet that came with my Geodon. I've never taken Zyprexa, and am nervous about the weight gain issue. Have you ever known anyone to take Zyp and *not* gain weight? My pdoc says you can take it with Topomax to offset the weight gain problem. Not sure I want to do that tho...
I've actually taken Seroquel once before and liked it a lot. I was on a small dose before bed. You've given me an idea--maybe if this doesn't go away, I could try losing the Geodon & upping my old dose of Seroquel (with my pdoc's consent of course...)
Thanks--A

Thanks for the input. I also think that I am feeling a bit better on Geodon re: less racing thoughts, so I am inclined to stick it out a little longer.

Risperdal is good (I had to take it w/ Bromocriptine to counteract increased prolactin levels). Every single report I have heard about Zyprexa includes significant weight gain.

Mimi,
I didn't know there was a drug to take to prevent lactation. Well, duh, I guess they do give new mothers who don't want to breastfeed a pill to stop milk production. That is certainly good news b/c this was the side effect from Risperdal that made me decide to go off it. I am comforted by the fact that I can go back to Seroquel and Risperdal too now if I really can't take the Geodon. Thanks--
Allison
