Nardil update

Posted by jerrympls on July 31, 2003, at 2:27:58

Hi all-

You may have remembered my post last month that I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and they switched me to Nardil. And I havenothing but praise for it. I've been on EVERYTHING even have the VNS implant (which I am having removed next month because it did not work for me). Anyway, I'm at 45mg now, and havebeen able to work, go out with friends, and get back into life. I'm not 100% yet - but getting there. If you've tried everything - try Nardil. the results are amazing - for me at least - and my depression has been treatment resistant for 12 years.

One question tho - and perhaps some of you may be able to answer this: I had to go to three pharmacies for my refill because they say that the company doesn't make as much of it anymore. So, it's a long involved process by where they have to call the manufacturer and arrange a drop-shipment of Nardil, etc etc - basically taking a week to finally get to the pharmacy. Anyone know why this is?? Nardil is saving my life and I'm worried the manufacutuer will suddently stop making it for some unkown reason. Anyone know?????

Thanks!
jerry

Jerry:

I have a possible chance of getting the VNS in the future and was wondering - did the VNS make your condition worse, or did it just not do anything? It's a very, very, very hard decision as to whether to actually try that thing or not. Was it a big deal to get it implanted, and then subsequently explanted? Do you wish you'd never done it?

VNS Stands for Vegal Nerve Stimulator. It's a "pacemaker for the brain." Basically, it's a device the size of a pocketwatch that's impanted under the skin with a lead that it attached to yoru vegus nerve. It was originally developed for treatmetn-resistant epilepsy and now they are doing an FDA study for treatment-resistant depression. I am involved in the study. It involves 250 people accross the US and is in the final year of the 3 year study.

For some people it has been a miracle - for others it hasn't worked. They've been testing it much like a new medication - change the settings and wait a week or two to see if things get better, etc.
