KLONOPIN INEFFECTIVE -- ANYONE USING XANAX?

Posted by Lainy on July 29, 2003, at 21:40:44

I'm on 3mg of Klonopin daily. It is COMPLETELY ineffective. I know my doc will not increase the dosage. I've been reading a bit about Xanax. I was wondering how people find it's effectiveness for nervousness/anxiety?

Did it work at all when you first started taking it?

I have never taken Klonipin, but i do take Xanax. On days when i have to go to work i take .5mg (very high stress job), then at night i take another .5mg to help me fall asleep.
On days when i don't work, i find that i still need to take a half tab (.25mg) to feel "right". I have read xanax can be highly addictive and have terrible side effects when trying to come off of it. I like how it takes that edgey, non-specicif anxious feeling away from me, and still lets me respond appropriately to an actual highly stressful event and be able to think strait. I have never gotten that goofy or drunk type sensation you can get from valium (i have anyway). I feel like xanax helps me function in my daily life without "losing it" but certainly doesn't make me high or give me a buzz or anything. I'm always amazed at all the arrests in the paper i read about people having xanax pills to sell illegally. There is apparently a huge market out there of folks that want it. I guess if you took a high dose it would get you high, but for my daily life i find it highly valuable to help keep my nerves calmed and still keep my mind sharp.

What do you mean by "completely ineffective"? And what is your diagnosis?

Xanax is a short-acting benzo - about a 12 hr half lige. Klonopin is a long-acting benzo - about a 34 hr half life.

I was on Klonopin for a year...maybe 2.5 a day and then I thought that it had stopped working so I quit and went on Ativan. What I have realized is that you really need to analyze why you take it...Are you always anxious? Then stay on Klonopin. It is long acting and subtle. Xanax is almost universally used for panic and things like that because it is very rapid acting and thus, rapid leaving so to speak. Ativan is intermediate. I now take about 1 to 1.5 mg of k a day and I use Ativan for when I am about to explode. I now have a very high benzo tolerance which is unfortunate. I can take 2mg of Ativan at work and I am totally fine. That dose floors my patients. (I am a psychiatric RN) Xanax is a great med but it doesn't sound right for you..Klonopin and Xanax are like apples and Oranges...try Ativan next.

Can you describe ineffective? I dont mean to imply anything against you but.... some people think benzo's should always give you that buzzed, relaxed feeling. In my opinion after taking Klonopin for 3 years I feel no buzz,no sleepiness,no drowsiness etc.I feel nothing except my anxiety and panic disorder is at bay and under control.Judge its effectiveness on your symptoms slowly disappearing not on the "feeling"it gave you during the first 1-2 weeks.
