I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience, I take calcium, mag, zinc, vit D combo and some extra Mag. I seem to tolerate them fine. Any time I try just a plain 'ole multi vit and mineral or separate, say B vits, I feel awful. It's not just a GI thing, but a all over "bad", achy feeling, headache. If I stop taking them, within a few days, I feel alright. I've tried various types and forms, taking them different ways, etc. and it happens with all tries. I would really like to use a Multi vit/min for just overall insurance, but, well, I can't seem to tolerate them. Anybody else have this problem? I know a number of folks here suppliment ALOT, How do you tolerate them?

Well, I don't have the bad result you describe. I've heard of this same thing once before, and I think this friend finally decided it had something to do with either the binders or yeast (sometimes used as a source for B-vitamins). She eventually found a product she could tolerate, but I have no idea what it is.
Have you tried a liquid product?

Hi
I have no expertise in this area. But I do know that most vita/mineral supps I take make my skin and scalp burn-hair fall out. It's very noticable and uncomfortable. And it ebates about 3 days after I stop taking the vitamins.I think alot it has to do with the "high potency" of so many brands. Alot of our foods are well fortified with necessary nutrients (have you looked at the label on the ceral box?), so I don't wan't to take a pill which in a sense creates an "overdose" of vitamins and minerals. I do eat a healthy diet, but I am sure there are some things that I am missing. But I have no clue what...
So when I go to the pharmacy (I have LONG given up on the health food store, WAY too expensive and the pills are chaulk filled with herbs and greens and ingredients that I may react too...), I look for the lowest potency vits out there. Just plain and simple, most natural (minus colors or fillers to be allergic too) vit/min supplement there. So far I am ok on this "low dose" regime. I just don't think with such fortified foods and drinks available, we need these super-mega vitamins. They can really cause problems.
Well, JMHO!

Thanks to you both. Larry, I always appreciate your input. I tried two liquids and had the symptoms on one and the second was WAY expensive and I didn't feel the benefits outweighted the cost.
Chloe, if you will share the specifics of what brand, store name, etc. you use, I would really like that info.
Again, Thanks to you both

mega-doses of vitamins are like drugs, basically, since they are usually of a much higher dose than could reasonably be obtained through the diet, and they should be thought of as such. some people tolerate them but get little effect, some people swear by them (at least as adjuncts) and some people don`t even tolerate the low-dose variety.
other than that, if you really think you need a supplement and can`t tolerate pills, i think larry is right that you may have better luck with a liquid supplement with as few additional ingredients as possible. they taste very nasty, are often a bit more expensive, but are better absorbed and you may tolerate them better... in addition, i have a friend with a similar problem (and then some; he is allergic to ALL fruits and veggies unless heated above 120 degrees F so he actually does need a supplement) and what he does is he takes the liquid and pours it into the water he uses to make cream of wheat or oatmeal in the morning, and he says it actually tastes pretty good).

The reason a liquid may be ideal is because there is no defined dose. Unlike a solid tablet, which gives you somebody else's idea of a daily dose, the liquid lets you use as little or as much as you want. You could take tiny amounts, spread out over the day. Moverover, liquids almost certainly avoid using salts that are poorly soluble, so you probably get a more highly bioavailable supplement, as well. No binders, either.
