Word retrieval and Effexor clearly dose related

Posted by noa on May 28, 2003, at 16:58:52

When I was taking higher doses of Effexor/Effexor XR in the past (up to 450) I had experienced major word retrieval problems, which were extremely frustrating for me, especially at work. After reducing the effexor dose a few years ago, the word retrieval difficulties subsided.

Well, I very recently happened upon an accidental short term experiment with my effexor xr, and saw how clearly word retrieval problems were induced by higher doses, and rather quickly at that.

Here it is:

1. Ran out of 75 mg capsules of Effexor XR, waiting for scrip to be refilled.

2. In the meantime, used the 37.5's (that I no longer usually use since recently lowering dose from 262.5 to 225).

3. About 2 days later, went out to lunch with some friends over the weekend and am very aware of major word retrieval problems. I'm hemming and hawing and substituting with approximations that sound rather silly. No one else seems to care (friends!) but it is very noticeable to me and I have no idea why it is happening. I even say something about it to one friend during a conversation when I am just tripping all over my words, trying to locate the right one.

4. Next morning, I go to take Effexor, using same 37.5's. Find myself confused in calculating the number of 37.5's to take in place of 75's. Realize I had been taking 9(!) pills to cover the 3x 75 dose, instead of 6 pills. Immediate forehead slap (DUH!) about really dumb math mistake, and take 6, which is the correct amount.

5. Five minutes later, have "Aha!" experience about word retrieval problems.

It's interesting that you should say that because I've been having mild word retrieval problems but have not even considered that Effexor could be the culprit. I've been on 150 mg for several weeks.

Sounds likely to me. A dose as low as 150 mg would not be problematic for me for word retrieval, but we're all different.

Some people find Effexor SEs are initial only and subside. I tend not to have that experience personally, but just thought I'd mention that.
