I need a good night's sleep for once!!
Has anybody had any problem in using very low doses (0.625-1.25mg) of klonopin before bedtime for long-term sleep therapy?
Is there any next day withdrawal effect in just using the klonopin at night and not during the day? Will I have more daytime anxiety?
Ambien and Sonata don't work b/c of their short-half lives - they wake me up after about 4 hours.
And my psychiatrist says that there is a lot more abuse with ambien than with klonopin, is this true?

It helps me fall asleep and lasts all night. The only problem i have ever had is drowsiness the next day after taking more than 1mg. I do not find it addictive, as i have gone periods without it with no problems and have not been tempted to abuse it.

Sonata woke me up too early as well, and I generally don't have trouble getting to sleep-the main trouble is staying asleep. I've never tried Ambien. I've never had any trouble with withdrawal effects (next-day) from Klonopin. The biggest hassle I've found is avoiding meds/dosages during the day that tend to trigger/aggravate the insomnia from the getgo. I use Klonopin triple-use as an antimanic, antipanic, and hypnotic. It's also cheap.

I have used it for sleep (sleep problems due to Effexor) in small doses, with no withdrawal or habituation. I tend to react strongly to sedating meds, though, so habituation leading to need for increased doses, or wanting to take it during the day is extremely low risk for me. I switched to ativan, though, because klonopin lasted a bit too long for me, and it was therefore hard to wake up in the morning.

I think if you keep your nightly doses of Klonipin relatively low you shouldn't have problems with daytime anxiety or withdrawal. Have you tried Trazadone to sleep? I find that works better than anything else.

HK,

It's a little off-topic, but have you ever tried magnesium supplementation as a sleep aid? I take 800 or 1,000 mg (measured as magnesium) at bedtime. I currently use a combination of magnesium citrate and magnesium malate. It puts me to sleep and keeps me sleeping throughout the night (interrupted only by potty breaks, after which I go right back to sleep).
It may or may not work for you, but it might be worth a trial to find out.

thanks to all who posted re: klonopin and sleep.
As for the magnesium, I've tried regular brand store Mg (250-750mg) and found it relaxing, but I think it played a part in increasing sleep disruption. Anybody else have this problem? I have tried experimenting with different dosages but no real success. Is magnesium citrate or the other formulations better for sleep?

Hi HOK,
I loved the magnesium effect for relaxation and it quelled my temper. But, after 10 days it started causing sleep disruption. I read on the Mg website that this is called type II insomnia(if there is such a thing). The advice was to take your last dose of 400 mg of Mg AND 500 mg of Ca. I have gone down to about 50 mg of Mg plus some Ca and don't have a good effect anymore. I have had rebound insomnia and I am sad that the Mg didn't work out. It calmed me better than a benzo. I don't know if it matters what type you take. I took/take magnesium citrate. I am getting some benadryl tonight. What was the dose you took? I had fish oil cause sleep disruption too. Ever tried that? Don't know why, I wish someone could explain it to me. take care
