OK, I've done 4 days so far on Anafranil - 2 on 25mg and 2 on 50mg. I have noticed the s/effect of depression mostly. Others include itchiness. Not that sedate.
But this depression is a pain, with concentration probs...I am in the middle of a uni semester!
I must say that Nardil, my ex-girlfriend, initially made me depressed and apathetic - but look how our relationshipped flourished over time!
Maybe there is an inverse relationship here...the more depressed earlier the happier later?
Anyhow, help us dudes and dudettes, I have got heavy duty uni work and need to know approx how long this will last. Or is there any remedies, short-term?
BTW, how long did it take to kick in for you,
Love,
depressed Ace.

Ace,
My instinct (and first-hand experience!)is telling me that the reason that you may be feeling depressed right now, after just starting the Anafranil, is this --- the Nardil is washed OUT of your system, leaving NO more Nardil to help you....AND the Anafranil is just beginning to enter your system but NOT YET enough to help you......that's the tough part about the MAOI wash-out period --- there is the time period where you can only wait for the Anafranil to begin helping you.....the good news is that every passing day brings you closer to the day when enough Anafranil is in your system to begin providing benefit....4 days is still quite early....my very best wishes to you Ace!

At the moment I'm feeling really down...but I'm not going to give up. Tonight I'll take 50mg and then tommorow up it to 75mg. Within 2 weeks I would like to get up to 150mg. Really, the sedation hasn't been too bad at all. In fact, apart from the second day on 25mg, where I took 3 benzos in the day, I havent really felt any.
But I do feel in a 'fog', sort of drugged out. And of course the depression. I have to be patient.
Oh, that sleep thing!...I experienced it ONLY 1 night - and all the stress I wasted before on worrying about it!!!
Thanks again dude.
Andrew.
BTW, how long before did it take to kick in for you?

Ace, I've never tried clomipramine before, but several TCA's, and they all (except nortriptyline) clobbered me with sedation and paradoxical depression for about 10-14 days before I noticed ANY positive effects.

Oh, that sleep thing!...I experienced it ONLY 1 night - and all the stress I wasted before on worrying about it!!!>>>>>>>>Yep, you just never really know how your unique chemistry will react to a med...everybody is unique!
Thanks again dude.

Hi Ace, I'm sorry to hear your going through hell. Hang in there, hey Ace I don't know if you got the email I sent you from pub med, but it talked about how Low plasma levels of prolactin and low cortisol levels on day one were both significantly associated with clinical response, (I'm not sure in what direction) to intervenous clomipramine at day 14 I don't want to through mud into the wash though it seems you've decided it would be best to go back to MAOI's I'll give you the site though...
If you go to Pubmed, it's called "Neuroendocrine predictors of response to intravenous comipramine therapy for refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder"
I just started my second day of nardil my doctor wants to raise it from 15mg by 15mg every two days until I get to sixty mg. Maybe I have a selective mem. but it seems most people who are really benefiting from it are on 90mg, do you think 60mg is likely to be a beneficial dose?
Anyway all the best ace, don't worry about answering, I'll be praying for you....
Take care
Ben

Maybe I have a selective mem. but it seems most people who are really benefiting from it are on 90mg, do you think 60mg is likely to be a beneficial dose?Absolutely. But we want complete recovery not partial. I reccomend you stay on 60mg for 4 weeks. I am getting excited right now thinking about the happiness your going to feel...and I'm 99% sure you WILL feel it! The Nardil feeling is like no other...I've finally got it back...I'm loving the world!
Enough of that! Stay on 60mg for 4 weeks. Then if not 90-100% recovery ram it up to 90mg.

> BenBen, you are good person. Guys like you and McPac and all the other legends on this site really raise my spirits. I wish you much happiness and I am always there for any question to answer (if I know the answer!- Just don't ask me what happens when you die!).
BTW, things looked so bleak a few days ago it seemed I might have to drop chemistry and physics...NOT SO! My excellant brainiac Doctor (who I have constant disagreements with about theoretical issues! - But I love the guy, and we are right on with the med treatment...well the Anafranil situation was...hmmm...No comment!) is going to give me a special certificate which gives me an extra 2 weeks to study for my physics and chemistry. So if all goes to plan I can sit the exam to study medicine next year as a post grad! BTW, what philosphers have you studied? You were spot on about Nietzsche.
Take care spiritual brother,
Andrew.
