I am finally off of Effexor after several attempts on my own. I went to an additive medicine doctor who put me in a detox center. They weaned me off over five days with Klonodine and Phenobartital. Felt great in the hospital but when I came home, I had every horrid symptoms including the brain swishing, electric shocks, headache, couldn't stand the smell of anything, nausea, numbness. My doctor would not give me anything for withdrawal and I hated him but day by day, the symptoms subsided and after one week out of the hospital, the electric shocks stopped. They were the worst. I'm still tired and agitated but some days I feel great. I call Effexor the "drug from hell". I know of drug reps that joke that it used to be called "side fexor" because of the side effects. It should be taken off the market. To this day, I can't even look at the color associated with the box and logo for Effexor. I have such a strong adversion and don't think that anyone should be on a drug that is so hard to come off of.

Hi there,
Congrats on being free of effexor.
I just wanted to share my anxiety, as I am on 225mg (extended release) Effexor and have been for almost 1 year at that dose.
I want out.
My pdoc won't have it, concerned that I will fall back down to the depths of hell (severe depression) but I am worried what it is doing to me, and if I will ever eventually ever be able to get off it.
Am scared, and anxious.
Do you have any more feedback about the cirumstances of your withdrawal... would you recommened checking into hospital to come off it with proffessional support?
Thanx for the advise.
Best of luck
Taylor

I think he has a point BUT in the end the decision to stay on meds should be your decision and if you do decide to get off effexor, I suggest you find a different doctor willing to help you out.

>I don't think you should just assume that you will have horrible effexor withdrawl. I doubt you will need to be hospitalized. There is a lot of sensationalism on this website about Effexor. It is a good and safe drug and if handled correctly, withdrawl is not that bad.
Check out this post. It is by an old poster here who had treated people for symptoms of effexor withdrawl. I suggest if you want to get off effexor and you have problems to follow the advice of this post.
