My doctor is taking me off Prozac , which Ive been on for 6 years now at 20mg/day and putting me on 75 mg of Effexor XR to take the place of the Prozac. The reason for this being that the Prozac just did not take care of my anxiety that just recently crept up on me. The Prozac worked WONDERFULLY for depression, but NOT anxiety!!!! Just curious if anyone else is or has been in the same place as me with these meds? And if so, was it effective or what was your experience like??? Someone please tell me that it worked for them!!!! Agg! I keep hearing horrible things about Effexor and this is only my 4th day on it

Many people find it a good drug. It does seem to have a few more start up effects than most AD's.
Give it a good trial and let us know what you think.

I am just SO nervous as I have been basically symptom free for 7 years on the Prozac until I got this horrible anxiety (which I must say is possibly worse than being depressed... whoo)and I have already tried SO many other Ad's be4 finding Prozac which was HORRIBLE... I'm hoping someone out there has traded the P for the Effexor and can give me some words of encouragement.

Prozac pooped out on me after a couple of years. I then was on Paxil which had its limitations for me, and then to Effexor, which works for me. At a cost, I do admit, as there are some side effects for me. So, I take it in combo with Serzone, which helps to balance out some of the SEs.
We are each so different in how we react to meds, though.
If you are unsure, ask your doctor to share with you his thoughts about why effexor vs. other options--ie, the plusses and minuses of various meds for you--why he thinks effexor would be a best next step vs. other meds. It may help you to hear the reasoning.

I am not a doctor so obviously take my opinion for what you think it is worth. . . .

I think it would be a better idea to either raise the dose of prozac or add in a benzo or both. Since prozac is still working for your depression, I think going off it is a bad idea. Why not just add in xanax or klonopin to see if that helps your anxiety?? What are your symptoms like?

If managed properly effexor is a good drug and its withdrawl can be dealt with if you have a knowledgeable doctor.
