How good is Strattera for depression?

Posted by SLS on May 13, 2003, at 15:05:19

Hi.

I see that quite a few people with ADD/ADHD are doing well with Strattera (which is great!), but how effective is it as an antidepressant? My trial of Lexapro was disappointing. I felt no better, and the apathy it left me with made me less functional.

Thanks.

I tried lots of things (including MAOI) for my depression over the last 15 months. I like my current combination:

Prozac
Lithium
Strattera
Provigil

Both the Strattera and Provigil were added to counteract extreme lethargy. I found that either drug by itself didn't do it, but both drugs together make a BIG difference.

My understanding is that you want to take Strattera and an SSRI because Strattera doesn't work on Serontonin.

Hope it works for you, too!

I found that Strattera had a modest mood lift and made less irritable. Unfortunately, it actually gave me brain fog if you can believe it. It also made me tired intermittently and then sleep disruption throughout the night. Heart palpitations were also a problem. I tried it for about three weeks at low doses and although, some of the adverse effects seemed to lighten up, I still wasn't satisfied.

Since I'm pretty sensitive to most meds my reporting should really be taken with a grain of salt. But overall, I was really disappointed in it. I'm hoping duloxetine will fair better.
