sedation-which med?

Posted by e503 on April 29, 2003, at 19:06:53

ben started abilify a little over a week ago. started on 15 mg. but he was a zombie, so we decreased to 7.5 and he was much better for a few days. today he comes home from school and falls asleep - never happened before. he is also taking 900 mg. trileptal, (300 mg. 3 x a day), and zoloft 75 mg. a.m. I have been thinking of taking him off trileptal, if the abilify works, as the trileptal never really did anything for him- until he started the abilify. So I am wondering , which med is causing this sedation? Could the abilify just be kicking in and it is now, in combination with the trileptal, causing sedation? Any thoughts?
thanks,
elise

can anyone help? I can't figure out which way to go here! Ben was excellent this a.m. at school....best ever- and when he got home he seemed really really obsessive and kind of active, so I gave him 300 mg. trileptal. It helped calm him down , but still really obsessed and kind of pretty quiet. I am so confused about what med is causing his sedation.....would this happen with abilify this long after he started it? HELP!

I have never taken any of the drugs that Ben is on, so I can't really relate any experiences specifically, but I do know that sedation occurs quite often when someone starts taking an antipsychotic med. I know when I first took my antipsychotic I was extremely sleepy for several weeks, and then was tired after the dosage was increased. So, I spent 2 months basically sleeping all day. In the end the med worked great on my symptoms and it was all worth it.

So, I suggest you keep giving Ben the Abilify, and see if the sedation doesn't fade away after a couple months. These are strong medications but they do work for most people. Abilify has a good side effect profile (if I were to switch meds I would want to take Abilify first).

Also, I would suggest you bring this topic up at the next appointment--if the problem is severe enough there are other drugs that can help. I would avoid this option if at all possible, however, because I think taking the absolute minimum of meds is the best. I hope things work out for you and Ben.

Hi,
I know this reply is several days old, but I was on Abilify and Zoloft. The Abilify made me nausous, actually it made me puke. It didn't make me tired though - of course I was only on 10 mg. I don't know if that makes a difference. The Zoloft definately didn't knock me out, it pepped me up! Hope this helped, but you probably looked into it by now. Good luck! :) Michelle
