What would happen if you only took the diazepam? Do you NEED the Lex for depression?
Thanks,

> ~ jimI was on lex 3 1/2 months, also klonopin. Now I just take klonopin. With lex, I had severe nightmares, my teeth would "chatter", sharp pains shooting in the left side of my head, extreme fatigue, heart pounding. Not all of the s/e happened at the same time or every day. I would often awake in the middle of the night and arms or legs would be straight up in the air. Not a restful sleep situation. Gained 10 lbs. Probably from inactivity and total lack of motivation.
Without it I may wake up on average one morning a week and feel like crying for no reason but I can pull myself out of that state with a walk outside or phone call with a friend. It is good to be free of the s/e of lex. I know that 10 mg was the maximum dose I took, thinking that the increase from 5 would help. It made things worse. Perhaps I could tolerate 2.5 but I say why? I need less Klonopin (max .5 mg/day) without the lex. I had been on ad's for 7 years and will be very careful about the potential relapse into deep depression. But for now I feel better without any ad. It has been almost 8 weeks since my last dose.

hi again jane,
thanks for your response.
3 1/2 months with those SEs ..... Yikes! i am sorry you suffered that, and to hear you have been having to endure this struggle for so long (7 years!)!
i have only been on lex since march, so i'm just a baby, although reading this board makes me feel Real smart (HA!)!
i am grateful to hear that you have found a med combo (rather a "non-combo", because it's just the klonopin now, right?) that is working for you and that you are doing so well.... and i am especially grateful that you are so aware and vigilant against the danger of relapse... thank you.
take care,
~ jim

Hi Jane.

Lexapro often produces anxiety early in treatment. Sometimes it goes away before an antidepressant response becomes evident. I don't know off hand for what percentage of people the anxiety disappears. My experience is that it lessened after three weeks and disappeared completely by week 5. Unfortunately, it's not making my depression any better.

Your situation sounds like mine. First I went through very stressful events with family, then more life changes, insomnia, counseling which brought lots of unresolved issues to the surface, my dad died, my mom died and the empty nest came. Different ad's had intolerable side effects, some worked but induced apathy. Everytime I tried to stop I had discontinuation problems and then I didn't know if I was still depressed or just suffering from withdrawal. I'm rambling. To make a long story short--I thought ad's were the answer but had to take a benzo to counteract the se of ad. In March I got stuck in a blizzard for 3 days with no meds. I decided to give going without a try. I'm glad I did. I feel much more alive without Lex. I still take Klonopin and keep it at a steady state. I found that with benzos (I started with Xanax) I do much better if there is a steady amount in my system. For me that is .50/mg day. Never more (except for when I was on Lex and when I tried Wellbutrin.) Especially when I tried Wellbutrin I needed to up the dose of Klonopin because of anxiety. If you have more questions email me at NHGrandma@yahoo.com.
