PARNATE and NAUSEA

Posted by polarbear206 on May 10, 2003, at 6:43:46

Hi everyone,

Took a long break from posting here. Family life has been very hectic this time of year.

I have finally started the drug that I probably should of been on long ago. My new pdoc has been great and very open to my suggestions.

I washed out paxil with no problems. I weined down on imipramine from 100mg to 50mg over a 2 week period. That went very well too.

I sent an e-mail to Dr. Goldberg (Depression Central web site) about staying on a low dose of imipramine while adding parnate. He said this was safe to do as long as I washed out the paxil over a 10 day period.

This past wednesday my pdoc gave me the green light to start the parnate at 10mg the first week, then up to 20mg week 2, then up to 30mg. He assumed I was off the imipramine for 2 weeks, but I didn't tell him that I stayed on 50mg. I started the parnate on wednesday, then stopped the imipramine on thursday. I noticed right away I was able to get up in the morning and have motivation to start my day. this is very welcoming! My only problem is I have having intermittent nausea. Vomited a couple of times too. Has anyone had nausea with initial start of parnate? I'm also thinking that the nausea could be from stopping the imipramine at 50mg when I started the parnate
I have no appetite. I eat very little. Keeping myself hydrated with H2O and ice chips.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Polarbear

I develop some nausea whenever I start Parnate, and loss of appetite is also fairly common. But I've never vomited from it. If it keeps up, I'd definitely call my pdoc about it. You should also really keep them informed about precisely what meds you may still be taking. That's the best way to avoid unwanted side effects.

Hi, good to see you back.

Weren't you on Lamictal for a while, and doing well on it?
Just wondered what prompted you to switch-did it fade out, or was it due to some kind of intolerance??

Best wishes,

Col.

Hi Colin,

I'm still on Lamictal. I forgot to mention it. I plan to stay on it with the parnate. It does a good job as a stabilizer. I was just sick of the multiple AD's and the side effects of the combination of paxil and imipramine. I'm hoping to get the everything I need out of the parnate. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Nice to hear from you. Hope all is well with you. What's your current cocktail?

Thanks,

Polarbear

Not to be an alarmist, but someone in our MAOI group recently suffered liver malfunction on Parnate. It is rare, but if the nausea continues or gets worse, please see a doc.

Hi there PB,

Thanks for asking, I'm still doing fairly well on Lamictal (up to 400mg now)and 10mg Prozac. They seem to complement one another.
Unfortunately, the Lamictal effect is waning, and soon I'll have to reinforce it with something 'sturdy'.Considering a small dose of depakote, and....another AD of some description.I need something I can tolerate in high doses!!
I hope you're successful with Parnate.Let us know how it goes(and how you cope with the dietary restrictions-guess the cheese and wine parties are out for a while eh??.

Good luck,

Col.
