switching from Zyprexa to Risperdal

Posted by liz238 on May 9, 2003, at 18:47:38

Hi!
I am switching from Zyprexa to Risperdal because of the weight I gained. Has anyone else tried this switch? My Psychiatrist says that Risperdal has less weight gain and less drowsiness. Also, I wonder if it is comparable with Zyprexa in terms of cognitive function...I found that my thinking/cognition actually improved with Zyprexa
Thanks,
Liz

Have you considered Geodon or Abilify? They are the only atypicals that are weight neutral. A lot of people gain weight on Risperdal (although it is not as bad as Zyprexa). I hope things go well.

Liz,

I agree with xjs - Geodon worked very well for me with no side effects. If you are prone to gaining weight from meds, Risperdal could still make you gain but not like Zyprexa (#1 lard drug).

I don't know anything about Abilify personally.

Risperdal gave me extremely blurred vision. However, I'm one of those people who gets the most obscure side effects possible. I even got the Lamictal rash that supposedly happens to maybe 3% of those who use it.

Another possibility is Sulpiride (Dogmatil). It worked VERY well for me but if you live in the US, you'll have to order it from overseas. It stopped my anxious thought patterns and helped tremendously with social phobia as well.

Best of health to you!

Karen
