Sometimes it seems that the scoring the med manufacturers use on the pills don't give you a real neat split into halves. Since I probably will want to cut .5 mg Klonopin into quarters or even eighths, I'll probably buy a pill cutter. Has anyone used one of these and found it helpful (for really small dose reductions)? And, what about using the cutter on hard pills like Parnate, which are not meant to be cut? It's made only in 10 mg. size,so if you'd like to try something like 35 mg. you'd have to cut this little red pebble in half. Anyone with precision pill cutting experience, please speaketh.

I got a nice one from the drugstore for a couple of bucks. It's got 2 little compartments so you can cut the pill, take a piece, and just sweep the rest into the compartment to use later. That's really nice when you're dealing with smaller pills or cutting things into quarters - those little bits can be hard to handle.
I did use my pill cutter to help with Xanax withdrawl. I got them down to quarters.
I've never seen Parnate, but is it a hard, coated pill (not sustained release though)? I've had success with the pill cutter and coated pills/tablets. The trick is to just really quickly and firmly press down on the cutter - you get a nice clean break then. If you just kind of gently push on it, things tend to crumble.
I found it to be definitely worth the investment! If you get one, you might want to practice on some aspirin or some other OTC pills, get a feel for using it.

I also have one from the drug store, just a small no frills one. It really depends on the pills as to how neatly you can slice and dice them.

I dont think that some pills are meant to be cut, ones with a score on are fine, but ones with coating, and some others can actually make you Ill if you cut them. I think its because some of them can be slow release ones, and not necessarily say so on the packet, and its also got something to do with the way they are digested or whetever, im not sure.

Yes, it's an MAOI anti depresssant pill that is hard and coated. Don't know if it's sustaned release. One poster cautioned about cutting pills like this, that are maybe not meant to be cut, as there could be negative consequences. I never thought of that; would ask my pdoc.

Hi
I'm REALLY interested in purchasing a pill cutter but it's just impossible to find one here in Brazil. Does any one have a suggestion on a pharmacy that might be able to send one here?
Thanks,
Ricardo

Online drugstores like www.drugstore.com have pill cutters/splitters. Just do a search for "pill cutter" or "pill splitter" from their main home page.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.
Actually, www.drugstore.com wouldn't ship overseas, but I did find this UK site (inhouse pharmacy, if I'm not mistaken) that accepted my order. Thanks a lot!

Hi Cubby,
You may already know this, but many film coated tablets are designed to pass through the stomach undigested(to be absorbed in the small-intestine)and are rendered useless by stomach acids if split. Here's a few pages of a usefull link...
