Hi -
I was on verapamil some years ago (240-360mg) for
migraine prophylaxis. I wasn't aware of any mood stabilizing properties it might have, and I was taking a variety of ADs at the same time, so it's hard to think back in retrospect if it did anything for mood. I found it somewhat less sedating than beta blockers.I've tried Depakote more recently, and I find it does help a bit with mood. Unfortunately, I haven't really found a medication that lessens the frequency of my migraines - I'm lucky to have unusual ones I guess ;-) But these drugs do help a lot of people with their migraines, and are definitely worth trying.
I wish I could be of more help here, but good luck to you.

Karen,I take verapamil 80 mg 3x/daily for migraine prevention. It seems to lessen the frequency and severity of my migraine symptoms. (I have more 'complicated migraine' symptoms than pain.)
The neuro who dx'd me and prescribed it said that it will only work this way, not as the extended release form. I've heard the same said for verapamil for mood stabilizing.
One negative side effect of it for me is that it does dampen the intensity of my feelings. But if your moods need dampening, why not try it out? It's cheap, and available in a generic.

hi
Yup, I take 360mg verapamil 1x day with 1000mg depakote er 1x a day (dr just started doing this because I kept forgetting my am doses)Depakote ER is new to me, and I havent noticed a difference from the plain Depakote.
I guess it comes down to try it...YMMV.
The reassuring thing for me, when I added Verapamil, was the side effects are basically benign...constipation, and, if you are on too much, faintness, dizziness when rising too fast...etc. The constipation, for me seems to be solved by vigorously watching water intake and fiber.
hope that helps. Verapamil sure has helped me. It seems to be a thing to try after lots of other things haven't worked, so not many people are on it for mood stablizing.
I don't have migranes so cannot comment on that.
