I said in a previous post that I'd give updates as to how this drug effects Social Phobia. It's been about two weeks so far. I take 200 - 300mg a day, and I have practically no anxiety symptoms at all. No fatigue, either. So that's great, but at the same time, I haven't noticed any prosocial effects either. I'm thinking the dose might be too high. I ordered smaller pills, and will reduce the dose to about 150 mg/day to see if there's any difference.

Michael, just wondering, does Picamilon work on the GABA system? How exactly does Picamilon work? Thanx.... Daizy

I felt the calming effects of Picamilon on the first day. It did not make me restless at all. For the first week, it tightened my chest a little for about an hour after the first dose in the mornings. That stopped after a week. Now I have no anxiety at all. None. Also, the dosage I'm taking (300 mg a day) is higher than recommended, so lower doses may have even better effects.

>Daizy - Picamilon is GABA chemically combined with niacin (vitamin B3). GABA by itself has a lot of trouble getting past the blood brain barrier, but when combined with niacin this is not a problem. So Picamilon basically allows the GABA to go straight to your brain.

Michael - That's great the Picamilon is working for you. Is it readily available in the US? Are you on other meds too? Does it work for depression too?
Thanks - caha

> It started working right away. It did not make me restless at first, but here's what I found. All sites & studies that I read stated that at 50mg doses 3X a day, Picamilon has an anti-anxiety effect, while at 100mg doses 3X a day it has a stimulatory (and possibly anti-depressive) effect as well. I only have social phobia, no depression, so 50mg doses would be right for me. But the site I ordered it only provided 100 mg tablets. I find that 100 mg does completely take away the fearful anxiety, but makes me feel slightly overstimulated - not in an anxious way, but in a slightly giddy way. Why would a difference of 50 mg make such a difference? Because Picamilon is a very powerful drug. It's GABA bonded to vitamin B3, which enables the GABA to go directly to the brain. The effects are potent, cumulatory and very real. In fact, I had to take a break from this medication because I was experiencing signs of too much GABA, such as tingling in the extremities and numbness around the mouth.Another thing - Picamilon seems to greatly magnify the effects of alcohol, which makes sense. One beer, and I'm extremely social (not manic) and confident.
Overall - the lack of anxiety is a wonderful thing. But this drug seems to be so powerful that it's very important to get the dosing right and stick to a schedule. I definitely recommend that social phobes give it a try, not sure about depression.

Hey caha. Let me try to address your questions:Picamilon is not readily available in the U.S. You have to order it online, but I can't give you the website b/c that's against the rules. Just do a search on the net and the sites will pop up.
I am on no other meds right now.
As far as usefulness for depression, check out my response in the post above this one.

It sounds as if most who have used it, do so for social phobia?
(What dose do you use?)Is it not also supposed to be somewhat "acitvating" when a slightly higher dose is taken?
Anyone using it for its stimulating/activating properties, to address fatigue?
And if so, would you characterize its affect as energizing physically or mentally, or increased motivation, or something else?
(what dose do you use?)Does anyone use it on an as needed basis, rather than taking it daily? (for either reason)
Also - do most get it via the internet, or is it also available at the ususal supplement/nutrition stores?
Thanks for any feedback.

In reply to Picamilon - Q's re: use/dose/exp/availablty etc., posted by michael on May 7, 2003, at 3:17:28
>Michael, Picamilon still kicks *ss for my social phobia. I haven't noticed drowsiness, but it does not help with dysthymia (not at the dose I take anyway.
1. It's effects: it's somewhat energizing at higher doses (100mg 3X a day), and produces a calming quality at lower doses (50 mg 3X/day). I use it at lower doses b/c I like the calming influence. When I was using it at higher doses in the beginning, it definately put some pep in my step. But what does it really do? For me, it has completely and utterly taken away the physiological symptoms of anxiety (racing heartbeat, cold feeling in chest, shaking). But it is less effective as far sas stopping the cognitive aspects of SP. In other words, I still have anxious thoughts, but they have much less of a hold on me because they cause no physical response.
2. Dosage: I use it basically every day, though sometimes I skip entire days because it is a powerful drug and it accumulates in the system.
3. Availability: it is very easy to get. Just type in "picamilon" in yahoo and go from there.
4. Some other things you should know: I've noticed a strange effect with Picamilon. It potentiates the effects of alcohol, so that I get extremely outgoing and gregarious after just one beer. It gives me a VERY happy buzz (not mania, though). Yet strangely enough, I've noticed that no matter how much beer I drink, I don't ever get drunk. Ever. I had 12 beers the other night with no food, and didn't go beyond moderately buzzed. Don't try this at home! Also, it doesn't really help with flat affect, and may exacerbate this condition. You may need to add a mood enhancer if you suffer from this problem.
Hope that helps! (Michael Bell)

I've been experimenting with Picamilon, and it does seem (for me) to have a mild anxiolytic effect. It's certainly not dramatic, but I could see how it might work quite well for others. There doesn't seem to be any interaction with my other meds (benzos, Neurontin, Adderall), but I'd be cautious at first, especially if you're on benzos.
As for legality, I don't know its status for certain, but it's freely available (from within the US) via the Internet, so I doubt it's controlled in any way. However, Dr. Bob has expressed concerns (while acknowledging freely that he doesn't know its legal status).

Don't know for sure but would be very surprised if it is illeagal - You can buy GABA at any health food/supplement store and of course, niacin, which is all it is I believe.
