Very interesting tidbit about Vitamin B6 GABA

Posted by Michael Bell on May 6, 2003, at 23:09:48

I already knew that Vitamin B6 is partly responsible for the production of various neurochemicals, but I did not know this:

GABA is formed by the decarboxylization of the amino acid L-glutamic acid. The rate-determining enzyme that controls this step is called GAD. The ESSENTIAL COFACTOR of GAD is Vitamin B6! Vitamin B6 converts GAD into GABA. I also found hundreds of reports stating that deficiencies in Vitamin B6 are known to cause anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, seizures.

I wonder what a little B6 supplementation might do for my GABA levels? Hmmm...

---------------

This is true of the B vitamins in general. From what I've read, it's usually only an issue for a small population (elderly, alcoholics, those with digestive disorders).
Strangely, one of the symptoms of B6 deficiency are cracked sores at the corner of the mouth, which I just had last week. Depending on what you come across on the Internet, this may mean that I have a B6 deficiency, small yeast infection, AIDS, or Sjogren's Syndrome. I'll put my money on the infection.
