getting meds. . help!

Posted by Sarah S on May 2, 2003, at 16:31:20

somebody please help me, a few weeks ago my pdoc suddenly stopped prescribing ativan and after carefully rationing my remaining pills for the past few weeks (I didn't have enough to do a steady taper and the pdoc wouldn't help me) I have now run out, I have an appointment with a new pdoc for May 22 but the withdrawal has set in and I can't make it until then. All I want is something to make the withdrawal easier. I saw a doctor on my college campus and begged for Klonopin or Neurontin or ANYTHING that would make it easier, but all he would do was increase my Wellbutrin dosage (great drug, but it does NOT help with anxiety or panic attacks). I am going through hell on earth and I have to start a new job in a few days. I can't deal with this and I am going to kill myself if I can't find a doctor who will help me, but none of them will. I envy the heroin addicts because they get to have methadone when they withdraw, but those of us who get problems from withdrawing from our prescribed medications don't get shit!!! Is there anything that can help????

What a terrible situation to be in - I'm so sorry. I don't know if I can offer anything useful, but could you call the new pdoc and explain the situation - you have an emergency, see if they will prescribe something for you until your first appointment? Or if you have any type of dr that you have seen regularly in the past, perhaps contact them and explain and see if they will give you anything.

I really hope someone here can offer you good advice. I don't know if there are any herbal or over-the-counter remedies that might help. Benadryl is an OTC anti-histamine that I use for help sleeping sometimes - it's very sedating. I don't know if something like that would help you right now or not.

Good luck, hang in there, and keep us posted.

If you're feeling suicidal, please also get help in person.

> those of us who get problems from withdrawing from our prescribed medications don't get sh*t!!!

I'm sorry if it's frustrating, the situation you're in, but please don't use language here that could offend others, thanks.

Bob

i'm so sorry to hear about this.
As snoozy mentioned, an OTC antihistamine may help a good deal or at least a little, though i'm not sure.
Also, i don't know if this far too minor be helpful for you, but there are a number of herbs that are said to be able to help ease tranquilizer w/drawal (it's worth a try; i recommend you try one or so of these) :
Valerian Root, Passionflower, Kava Kava, and maybe Skullcap or something. If youre not on any other meds that would cause a reaction, you'll probably have to use high doses of these herbs to notice benefit.
Oh, also, you might want to use a little alcohol to help you until you can some more prescription, just to help you through. Good luck.

Sarah-why won't they help? Insurance reasons? They think you are faking it? Why? I am not familiar with your situation, so I don't know. I just had to set up an appt. with a therapist today. $20 a session. It's going to break me. But I know I will go absolutely nuts. Have you tried a community mental health? They go by your income. Or a church services? Hope it helps. : )
