Ativan Dosage

Posted by manhattom on March 29, 2003, at 21:27:46

What would be considered an overdose of ativan?

I am a 20 year old male, 175 pounds. I have a high tolerance to prescription drugs.

I have insomnia, and i use ativan 3 to 4 times a week to go to sleep. my normal dose is 4-5 mg before bedtime, but tonight I took 7-8. is that going to be a problem? i had heard that overdose levels were quite high for benzos.

my prescription says a max of 8 mg per day.

i am resistant to ambien, sonata, etc.

i have taken up to 8 mg of xanax and 15 mg of valium before (on separate occasions, obviously).

i wanted to know at what point i would be hitting the danger level for overdose. i don't use ativan unless i need it, because of the addiction potential, i don't drink alcohol, and i don't do any other drugs that would add to the efficacy of ativan.

i know they use up to 15 mg in minor surgical procedures, but basically, is going over 10 mg for insomnia purposes dangerous?

You really should ask your doctor. It's very hard to OD on benzos (unless you combine them with alcohol) but that does sound like a lot. However, tolerance varies, and if you just need that amount occasionally, maybe it's alright.

Again, this is definitely a question for your doctor.

thank you, viridius. it's just a matter of privacy, because i'm en route to applying to PhD programs in clinical psych, and having a history of ativan use or problems such as that can be a serious problem if they are out in the open, so i want to be as careful and confidential as possible, even if i am using it for the right reasons. i am concerned that my doctor will want to take away the ativan, or that he might mark me down as at risk for addiction.

Call a pharmacy, and ask anonymously. Especially if they aren't busy (I've found that calling all night pharmacies in the middle of the night, they aren't too busy, then again, you're trying to get some sleep), they are more than willing to talk to you about your meds.

That sounds like a LOT of ativan. I am at the other end of the spectrum--I take a quarter of a mg every night.

Just curious--why did you take double your usual dose?
