Social Phobia - various medsnot exactly, all

Posted by Franz on March 16, 2003, at 15:55:08

Hi not exactly, you posted about mirapex

How effective and at what dose?.

Is it much different in effect than oral selegiline?

What was that you noticed?. Stimulation, confidence?.

Thanks

FWIW, here's my opinions re various SP meds based on my own personal experience (YMMV).

GABA meds that help:
neurontin
klonopin

GABA meds that don't help (by themselves):
valium
alcohol

DA meds that help:
mirapex
selegiline (patch)

DA meds that don't help (by themselves):
selegiline (oral)
ritalin
dexedrine
wellbutrin
cocaine

bizarre combos that have worked amazingly well:
selegiline (oral) + chocolate (contains phenethylamine)
ritalin + dexedrine
stelazine (a DA blocker!) + dexedrine
wellbutrin + ritalin
wellbutrin + alcohol
cocaine + alcohol

Mirapex for social anxiety? Im very interested in this because ive never heard anyone use it for this before but i always thought that theoretically it could be a good drug for this. Would love to hear anything.

Liebowitz did successful trials on Zofran for social anxiety in '96, but further studies weren't done because Glaxxo must have figured it wasn't worth it since not all insurance pays for full supplies of it. My insurance, though, will pay for as much of a 30 day supply my doctor prescribes (maybe because it's a PPO).

Of course, my doc said I'm "irrational" and that's his basis for not believing me. He said I can point to all the controlled studies I want, but I'm still irrational, and that's why I see him (I see him for social anxiety). I still don't understand what he means, since part of social anxiety is realizing your anxiety is exagerrated, so wouldn't it be rational to realize your anxiety isn't rational and seek treatment for it?

Anyway, if anyone tries Zofran for social anxiety, let me know.

The "rationality" issue can be pretty strange. In between meds, before I found my current psychiatrist, I saw a therapist several times during an episode of severe agitated depression. When I get into those states, I become very fixated on certain problems -- always real (nothing psychotic), but I think of all the worst-case scenarios, and they dominate my life.

I was quite aware that my degree of worry was exaggerated, but I got very frustrated when she kept telling me that my fears were "irrational". My response was no, they're rational, I'm just obsessing about them and they're interfering with my life, which is why I'm here (at the time I was involved in a complicated legal issue that could have caused me major problems). But she just insisted that I was "irrational". As you said, if that were the case, why was I actively seeking treatment?

I finally moved back to meds, this time successfully. I mentioned the above situation to my psychiatrist, and the anxiety it caused, and he said something like "wow, that would drive me crazy too -- I'm not surprised you were so stressed". That was one of the signs that he was a good guy. Another positive sign was that he wasn't surprised by my reactions to the ADs I'd tried, and said that they were to be expected for someone with an anxiety disorder like mine, who really needed benzos.

Anyway, you sound pretty rational, and sincere about looking for help. I wouldn't stay with a doctor who dismisses your ideas so freely and seems (based on some of your other posts) bent on keeping you away from the meds that might help most.
