Thanks Tina and Kerry for this great idea..I am all inspired and today I went and hired a treadmill for 3 months. So, I will try and fit it next to the (never used) exercise bike and maybe my husband and I will exercise and talk, instead of vegging out in front of the tv which is our usual winter hibernation thing! I am carrying an old sports injury, so the treadmill is the perfect start for me..
Perhaps we could list our personal goals on the e-groups website - mine are to get fit and be able to play sport with the kids down the park without having to sit down every five minutes. Go for it you gorgeous gals!!! I must say I havent felt this positive for ages...Deb.

I just wanted to mention a few things about diets that I think you ladies should know. First off, I am currently going to school to learn how to "help" people who want to better their current health status whether it be through nutrition or exercise. The program I am enrolled in is "Fitness and Leisure Management". Now I do not hold a phd in nutrition or anything but along with studying this topic, I have read hundreds of articles in bodybuilding magazines on nutrition and diets. I also compete in bodybuilding contests which requires a very strict 12 - 16 week diet so I have learned a thing or two about dieting.
Now unless one is training for a sport, I do not believe in diets. For starters, when one diets and looses a large amount of weight in a short period of time, they are loosing mostly muscle tissue and water - not fat. This is how most diets go - one diets until they reach their desired weight. They then go off of the diet and resume their normal eating habits. This yo-yo effect slows down the metabolism permanently. If someone wants to loose weight they need to gradually make changes to their diets. Every week, you change a thing or two to allow your body both mentally and physically to adjust to these new eating habits. You should not be looking for a short term diet but rather long term lifestyle adjustments. When trying to loose weight, you should be striving to loose a maximum of two pounds per week. Any more than this and the weight loss is mostly muscle and water, not fat. For every pound of fat you loose, a pound of muscle goes with it. So the next time you hear someone say they have lost twenty pounds, you can tell them they really only lost ten.
I could go on and on for hours so I will stop here. If any of you have any questions or need any help, just make a post and I will try to help you if I can. Hopefully the website you ladies are looking into gives good advice. Good luck!

Hi ladies,
I don't exactly want to lose weight, just become fit and healthy, which is what I assume everyone's ultimate goal is. So I'm in! Hopefully we will be there to encourage and support each other through. I aim to eat healthily (especially seeing as though one of the big symptoms of my depression has been bad eating habits - chocolate for breakfast, fruit cake for lunch, mars bar for dinner, plus choccy snacks throughout the day), drink more water and exercise more - just the usual!
Good luck to us all!
RachP.S. Brilliant idea!

Thanks Andre for your input - I read your post with great interest and I must say it sounds like me all over! It has made me think a bit more about how I will approach this. I think I will aim for a half kilo loss per week, guess thats about one pound. Also, I will try and drink more water, less coffee and I plan to exercise a minimum of three days per week - let me tell you that is three days per week more than I am doing now. So, how does that sound, combined with three good meals a day and no junk in between?
Thanks again for your input Andre...best wishes.

I subscribed but can't figure out how to read the messages at lotl page.
I am not a fan of diets in general, but I was thinking this morning that I had to start being more conscious of what I am eating because my weight and size are out of control and I feel very uncomfortable, literally, in my body. It just doesn't allow me to sit, sleep, bend, or move through space with ease.

You mentioned that you want to exercise 3X/week. Cardio (walking, biking, stairmaster, etc.) is the best type of exercise to burn calories. When performing exercise, your heart rate (HR) determines how many calories you are burning. Your HR should be between 120-140 beats/minute (bpm). Any less then 120 bpm and you are not burning a whole lot of calories. Anything over 140 and you begin working your muscles and hence, not burning as many calories. To calculate your target HR; 220-age/.6=target HR.
For the first few weeks, your target HR should be no more than 120 bpm, just to let you get accustomed to the exercise. Exercise sessions should be a max of 30m, no more, no less. When you feel ready, after a week or two, exercise for 40m per session using your target HR (use the equation above).
If you choose walking or the stair master, move you arms as well.
Biking is less effective then walking because there is no arm movement.
At your target HR, it takes approximately 30m before your body begins to burn any adipose tissue (fat stores). For the first 30m, you are burning primarily carbohydrates (your bodies first choice for energy). The longer you exercise, the more fat your burn as opposed to carbs.
If you are diabetic or have joint problems let me know - we were taught how to train a client under these conditions.
You also mentioned that you will eat three meals a day. What you want to do is feed your body more often. Eat six smaller meals a day and this will speed up your metabolism and you will loose weight. Put it this way, if you had an identical twin, the both of you ate the same # of calories, you ate six small meals/day while your twin ate three larger meals/day, you would have less body fat than your twin.
When comprising your meals, eat less carbohydrates and the pounds will melt off. Carbohydrates release more insulin then do fat and protein. Insulin shuttles the food from you blood into the various tissues in your body including adipose tissue (fat stores).
I will stop know since I could go on forever.
On tests, we get questions like yours all the time, just more complex. So feel free to ask as many questions as you want. Good luck!

Dear Andre,
Thankyou SO much for your post - I always feel so blessed when people take the time to help me, and I am sure the other (soon to be) lite ladies will benefit from your information.
I have tried to read health/exercise books etc, but always struggle to find what it is that will help me. Sometimes there is just too much information in them -you hit the nail right on the head with what I needed to know, and you explained it so I could easily read it.
I officially started my exercise programme last night, 15 mins on the treadmill and about 10m on this "easy rider" thingy - which you sit on and push with your legs, and pull with your arms at the same time. I found this the hardest, but am determined to keep going (says I who is having a coffee and ONE biscuit as we speak!!!)
Thanks again Andre, you are a treasure.Best wishes,
Deb.

Hello Noa - so nice to see you back here! When I go to LOTL I click on 'sign in', then on the next page I sign in with my e-mail addy and password, then I click on 'post', (this brings up where you can post messages) then I click on 'messages'. That should bring up the posts. I am sure there is a better way, but I couldnt figure it out.
Lots of love to you Noa,

Andre,
I don't understand the protein vs. carb. debate. Why do most "established" medical/health organizations endorse a higher carb diet (by diet, I mean daily food intake, not cutting calories). I don't know who to believe. I've heard high protein diets can cause liver damage. What ration of carb/protein/fat do you recommend? I've thought about just trying to eliminate breads, but not fruits and vegetables.

You did not mention if you were monitoring your HR during exercise. This is VERY important and it determines whether you are not working hard enough, working your muscles or burning the max amount of calories. It is very simple. To take your HR during exercise, find your pulse on your wrist or neck and take it for fifteen seconds. Then, multiply your HR by four and you get your HR per minute. If your hands are occupied, then stop the exercise and take your HR. If you want to burn the max calories per exercise session you MUST take your HR. Remember the equation to find your target HR. 220 - age x 0.6 = target HR. I made an error with the equation last night.
It is only your first week so I will keep things simple but limit any bread intake including biscuits. You can go nuts on the coffee though as it speeds up your metabolism. There are reasons why you should not eat bread and there are ways to speed up your metabolism even more but like I said, for now we will keep things simple. Good luck!

Kerry, if you were to go on a high carb diet you would loose less weight than if you went on a lower carb diet. It is as simple as that.
High protein diets (which lack any carbs) can cause minimal liver damage IF you were to not consume any carbs for a few weeks. You see, after three or four days of eating zero carbs, your body goes into a state called "ketosis". When your body is in ketosis, it burns fat for energy while sparing muscle tissue. Most normal diets destroy a large amount of muscle tissue. If your were to stay in ketosis for a few weeks straight, then you would cause liver damage. That is why you have heard that protein diets can cause liver damage.
If you are just beginning any sort of diet then do not worry about the proper ratio of macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat). Just concentrate on eliminating certain foods and adding certain foods to your diet. In a couple of weeks you can begin "fine tunning" your diet.
Green vegetables are the best carb to eat for weight loss (I will not go into why for now).
Limite your fruit intake to no more than one serving/day. Fructose, the natural occuring sugar found in fruits which gives it that sweet taste, is converted into fat by the liver.
Good luck!

This is serious stuff--you would be changing the way you metabolize food. I would not do it without discussing it with my doctor first.
A good friend of mine has been on the Atkins Diet, and, yes, she has had success losing weight, but she had to go off of it because it made her hypoglycemic. Then, she had difficulty reestablishing equilibrium and felt lousy for a few days.
Finally, it clearly is not something that is sustainable throughout your life. So it might help you lose the weight initially, but it won't necesarrily be the case that you can keep it off.
Just be careful.

> You are awesome. I am printing all your info. I think I must fall into the slowed metabolism forever group. It wasn't that I dieted and stopped, I just ate almost nothing as my metabolism seemed slow to begin with. I think I stopped eating any breakfast at about age 10.My mother flipped, but the doc said I was healthy and stop worrying! Then I used to save my lunch money so I could buy records. I ate very little, but it was usually sugar. Dinner was whatever Mom fixed and whatever she put on the plate. No dessert. I worked out 5 days a week and every night I did exercises in my bedroom. I was never emaciated, was actually pretty toned and bigger than most of my friends. College hit and the food sucked. I had very little money, so again, I hit salads for lunch and whatever for dinner. I married a health/exercise nut and as small as I was it was never good enough for the hubby. So I joined a spa. Worked out 3 days a week, ate half a sandwich for breakfast and the other half for lunch. Skipped dinner about 2 nights a week. Years later I had kids, did the Slimfast thing to lose that weight and then went to serving the healthy 3 squares a day due to the kids. WHat happened was steady, gradual weight gain that did not come off until the hubby left us. What is it about divorce that causes instant no effort weight loss? I wasn't even aware of losing it. 25 pounds melted. Then due to some money that came in, I looked into a tummy tuck for my big bloated pot belly. They supposedly did lipo in the process, but you couldn't tell it by me. My new husband could not tell any difference. Since then I have gained 35 pounds. I am bigger than I was at full term pregnancy with the first kid! And I was definitely pregnant looking. I am at the biggest size I have ever had to wear, and I will have to say that weight gain depresses me. I am not a diagnosed depressive, but this makes me miserable. I long to lose at least 40 pounds now. I am 5'2" and that would put me at 125. I don't think that is too small at all. During the divorce I was 117. Any advice on what speeds up the metab would be welcomed by me. I have a nodule on my thyroid that seems bigger but have had 3 opinions on it and the bloodwork comes back normal. I am going to sign up with LOTL it sounds great. You gave me some good advice on the Topomax a while back, and I was actually considering taking it just to lose weight. Thanks Andre

Hi again Andre
Now, just imagine me slapping my hand on my forehead - that was me when I read your post. You are so right, I didn't do the heart rate thing, but am now getting very good at reading it! Last night we walked for 30 mins, my heart rate was 130 - so I slowed down a bit. My husband was at 110, he is a lot fitter than me I guess.
Andre - thanks for your advice and input, it is greatly appreciated...With best wishes,
Deb.

I was not suggesting a ketogenic diet for the ladies. First of all, I highly dout they would be able to last threw two hole days of the hair pulling cravings this diet gives. Second, you have to know what is in everything you eat as well as the macronutrient content.

The idea is to be supportive here. Please don't make fun of what others have to say. I've asked you to be civil before, so I'm going to block you from posting for another 4 weeks.
