To all,
Please bear with me; I tried to post this before.
I'm switching from Zyprexa to Seroquel because of unwelcomed weight gain. I'm worried that Seroquel won't work as well and that I might run into side-effects that I cannot tolerate. Can anybody out there describe the differences in experiential profiles. Thanks for responding, Mimi

Hi Mimi,
I suppose it depends on what you are taking it for. I tried both for bipolar disorder. In terms of side-effects, seroquel was much nicer to me. I didn't experience any weight gain (no insatiable craving for food, either), it was less sedating, and my body didn't twitch at all like it would every 20 or 30 seconds when I was taking zyprexa. I was taking zyprexa in combo with several other meds, so take this for what it's worth.

Zyprexa did not cause me to twitch, but I did have cravings for sweets my weight increased by 10%(gained 16 lbs.). Mimi

I have found that Seroquel is the most sedating of the anti-psychotics. Many people take it right before bed though and it helps them sleep, and then most of the drowsiness is gone be the time you get up.

Hi Mimi:Well, we all respond differently, but I found Seroquel more sedating, and it did seem to cause a "bit" less anxiousness than Zyprexa. I honestly don't see why you wouldn't do good on the Seroquel, and regarding the weight gain, I understand and have read that after the first three-four months on the med, the weight gain 'levels off'. So, go slow and 'low' with the Seroquel. Please keep posting. Best wishes..:-)

To Jay and to rainbowlight
Thanks for posting... I'm finding that I don't sleep as well on the Seroquel, which is hard to take. I gained 16 pounds on Zyprexa over six months and it wasn't leveling off that I could tell. The doctor told me that Zyprexa was the drug most likely to cause weight gain, although the other antipsychotics were good for 4-5 lbs.
Thank you again, Mimi

Mimi, a lot of people report difficulty sleeping after stopping zyprexa. Maybe that's what you are experiencing and hopefully it will get better with time.

Jay,
Did you experince anxiety from xyprexa? I thought is was supposed to help with that issue.> > To all,

>To Jay,
I don't believe that I suffered any anxiety, above what I already had, from Zyprexa. But it is true that I had to start taking Buspar to allay excess anxiety while I was on Zyprexa. I haven't slept well two nights in a row, unlike the sound sleep I had while on Zyprexa. I woke up early this morning thinking I should swallow the unending weight gain and go back on Zyprexa and off Seroquel. Any thoughts on this dilemma?Mimi

> Jay,

Others on here have reported the same thing. I guess that is why I say to use with caution, as they certainly don't work for anxiety in a similar way as say benzos.
Hope that helps...

Umm, the Zyprexa/Buspar combo may be good, as I have heard others whom it has worked well for. If it did, talk to your doc about weight control. I can't really give a solid answer, but I also don't know how much better Seroquel is for weight gain. For the time being, your anxiety, and sleep and such are the most important thing, and maybe sticking it out for another month or so and you may find the weight gain evens out. I hope that helps a bit more.

I'm in the same boat - the weight gain with Z is unacceptable. My pdoc is recommending tons of exercise to counter it and I've been somewhat obliging - but it's hard to do that when somewhat depressed... She's away for 2 weeks so I've taken to using Z every third night and a benzo inbetween - hoping (without any evidence or advice) that I'll still benefit from the drug and it's glorious sleeps while counteracting the weight gain a bit. Great drug otherwise...

I joined a health club and drank slim fast shakes while on zyprexa and still managed to gain 50 pounds in 6 months. I don't think anything is worth it!

To little baldy29,
That's it...I'm hooked on this site. Thank you for reporting your weight gain experience with Zyprexa. I was starting to second guess myself, thinking maybe I should have stuck it out with Zyprexa. Nobody told me it was possible to gain more than 15 pounds! Mimi

To Mimi:
My Dr. is just as horrified by my weight gain as I am (I used to be a size 7). She has added topamax to the zyprexa and when the weight comes off (10 lbs. so far and no side effects) I will be switching to trileptal which is neutral towards weight gain-maybe another option for you. Good luck!

Good luck! Thanks a bunch. I'm going to look into trileptal--I haven't heard of it. I went from a size 3 to size 7/8! Okay, so I needed to gain some weight. Mimi
