Extended Release Neurontin

Posted by Bob on April 21, 2002, at 17:34:53

Does anybody know anything about the possible development of an "XR" for of Neurontin? It seems that drug would enhanced greatly by a slow release formula. I've looked on the internet, and cannot seem to find any evidence of it in the works.

Bob,

They would be interested in it if it wasn't for their development of a more refined pregabalin. Perhaps when that gains market approval-then we might see a "XR" version of that.

So, they've basically orphaned Neurontin already? When is Pregabalin due out, and is its half-life any better? When you say "more refined", what exactly do you mean?

Hi Bob,

I believe the patent on Neurontin (gabapentin) is about to run out-I think sometime this year or early next year. Anyhow, the "refined" statement was taken from a press release about a pregabalin clinical trial-I think the term I remember was "refined molecule". Also, from what I remember it has about roughly double the potency (milligram wise)to achieve similar clinical effects. I don't recall anything about its half-life, however. It would be nice if it was more like 8-12 hrs. instead of 5-7hrs. !
