Kramer: sleep aids

Posted by Bill L on April 1, 2002, at 10:01:43

Dr Kramer - My 19 year old daughter's anxiety and depression has been helped alot by a very small dose of Celexa (10 mg) for the past year and a half.

She also has always had sleep problems. 10 mg of Ambien kept her asleep for only about 4 hours. She is afraid of long term use (although her doctor does not seem concerned) and has cut her Ambien to 5 mg. On 5 mg she is not falling asleep.

What should she do:
1) take 10 mg Ambien indefinitely (is Sonata better?)
2) take anihistamines
3) someone in an above post mentioned vitamin B complex for sleep?
4) melatonin? Can melatonin exacerbate depression?
5) something else?

Also, on an unrelated issue. Although she is doing well on Celexa, should she switch to Lexapro (escitalopram)when it comes out around June?

If 10mg of Ambien does the job, I see no reason to change. There is no data that shows that long term use is a problem.
