Kramer: SAMe and omega-3

Posted by Anyuser on April 1, 2002, at 9:56:57

Dr. Kramer,

You said in another post that you are "big fan of SAMe." Could you please expand upon your view of the benefits of SAMe, and what dosage is necessary to achieve benefits.

I would also be interested to know if you any opinion as to the potential benefits of omega-3.

Thanks.

Same, must be taken at higher doses, preferably 800mg-1600mg for effectiveness. Very expensive. Same boosts seratonin levels and dopamine levels. I would say augmenting such with a lower dose of an ssri may be helpful, esp due to dopamine effects, may counteract ssris sexual side effects.
Due to my HMO plan, id rather spend my money on medication than same at this point. In the futre, you should see same being cheaper due to the fact not many people are buying it due to the price.

Omega 3's are good for the heart, joint health, and depression, but i would not rate it very effective for depression.

Geno, not true in all cases. I get absolutely excellent results by taking 200 mg/day!

>Very expensive.

Not really. I pay less than fifty cents a day for my SAM-e. That's less than the cost of a can of soda pop.

Just to note, like a.d's, SAM-e has the potential to trigger mania in bipolar disorder. I have also heard similar things for some of the omega oils, in particular flax. I always wondered why I had a hard time tolerating that stuff, and found out why.

I like both SAM-e and Omega-e fatty acids because they work. The dosage of Omega-3 is less clear to me, but SAM-e, for most people, requires 1200-16600 mg/day.

Jay,

Did you get mania from Flax or Sam-E?
I get a pretty strong effect (mostly a serotonergic feeling) from Flax.
